The Millton story - A legacy spanning generations

The Millton Vineyard and Winery was established by Annie and James Millton in 1984, on the banks of the Te Arai River in Manutuke, on the East Coast of New Zealand.

The land has been farmed by Annie’s family for over 150 years. Her father, John Clark, planting vineyards on his Manutuke estate during the late 1960s.

Annie grew up here, surrounded by her mother’s flowers, her father’s vines. In the 1980s she and her husband continued the family legacy, developing the country’s first organic vineyard and winery, and the first biodynamic wine estate in the Southern hemisphere.

Their children Monique and Sam are the newest generation to be raised in these deeply rooted family traditions.

Today, Annie is internationally recognised as a pioneer in organic and biodynamic viticulture, inspiring a new generation of New Zealand winemakers.

Two Paddocks:
"We started in 1993 with modest ambitions and first planted five acres of pinot noir at our original little vineyard at Gibbston, Central Otago in the deep south of New Zealand.

I wanted to produce a good pinot noir that would, at the very least, be enjoyed by my family and friends. Frankly, my friends will pretty much drink anything, so this didn't seem too hard. To our great surprise, our first vintage in 1997 was much better than we hoped, in spite of a difficult growing season.

In short, we have become outrageously ambitious - we want to produce year after year, the world's best pinot noir."

Some background on our next winemaker's visit - Bruce Taylor, Chief Winemaker at Tohu Wines, Marlborough, NZ. On his last visit, we shared a little laughter at any company that can plan for 5 years, let alone 500 years - at Tohu, they are committed.
Tohu:
"In 1998, we established the world’s first Māori-owned wine business. We are part of a family business and business of families.

Every Tohu bottle carries our distinctive logo, derived from a koru pattern. For Māori, the koru symbolises growth, life and the natural world, and our logo celebrates this iconic spiral. It represents the growth of our company and the journey of our people from the past to today. This koru signifies our long-term intergenerational goals and has become our tohu, our signature."
