These are 10 of the best red wine varieties for chilling 🍇

It’s worth noting that much of the chilled red category is composed of red blends. As such, you’ll want to look for blends that are predominantly made from one of these grapes as they will likely chill down just as well as a single variety — especially if accompanied by other wine grapes suitable for serving cold.

- On May 31, 2005, Sassicaia 2000 left Earth.
Onboard the Russian Foton-M2 capsule, three special bottles and several vine cuttings defied gravity for five weeks, alongside astronaut Roberto Vittori and the aerospace company Kayser.

The goal was ambitious: to study the effects of microgravity on the organoleptic properties of the wine and the biology of the vine. For this mission, a unique, ultra-light bottle was specially designed. Today, one of these rare "space travelers" is carefully preserved at Tenuta San Guido.

Mick and Jeanine Craven embody the artisanal, natural spirit of the Cape wine scene. Their wines, crafted from single vineyard, single varietal grapes exclusively within the Stellenbosch region, are known for their minimal intervention and subtle elegance.

The Cravens are dedicated to showcasing the unique terroir of Stellenbosch. This commitment is reflected in their increasing use of concrete for aging. They believe concrete enhances the wines’ structure, fruit expression, and texture while allowing for gentle oxygenation.

Tasting Notes:

Blue Grove Chardonnay - Fermented in old oak and matured in concrete, this wine exudes orchard blossom, lemon, and apple on the nose. The palate is understated but equally precise, with pure fruit and racy acidity leading to a dry finish. Alc: 12%.” – Christian Eedes, WInemag 93pts

The Firs Syrah - Grapes from Devon Valley. 100% whole-bunch fermentation in stainless steel tank before maturation in concrete. Alluring aromatics of violets, black berries, a pleasant leafy note and pepper. The palate is beautifully sappy and harmonious – excellent fruit concentration and bright acidity before appropriately firm tannins, the finish super-dry and persistent. Best release yet. Alc: 13%.” – Christian Eedes, Winemag

You can find both the Craven Blue Grove Chardonnay and Craven ‘The Firs’ Syrah on our website or in store.
