There’s a story behind every b**r. This one is Black Ven. 🦴🍺

We’re incredibly proud of the history, people and discoveries that make Lyme Regis such a special place. And few stories are more extraordinary than that of Mary Anning, the pioneering fossil hunter whose discoveries helped change our understanding of prehistoric life — right here on our doorstep.

During a half-term trip to Natural History Museum, London with his children, our head brewer Mike came face to face with a remarkable piece of Lyme Regis history: the fossil of a Temnodontosaurus platyodon, discovered by Mary Anning in 1832 in the cliffs to the east of Lyme Regis, known as Black Ven.

Measuring an incredible 6.83 metres long, it remains one of the largest and most complete Lower Jurassic ichthyosaurs ever discovered. Not bad for a day’s work on the Dorset coast.

And that’s where our rich, dark London Porter gets its name. Black Ven takes its name from the cliffs’ dark mudstone — a little piece of our Jurassic Coast heritage in every pint.

We also brew our special DIPA named after Mary herself. Look out for Curious Mary which is due to be re-released again on a special day in 2027…

We love a good story almost as much as we love a good b**r. So next time you crack open one of our cans or bottles, take a moment to read the back. There’s a whole lot of Lyme Regis in there. 🌊
