Description
Castello di Verduno was the first to plant a vineyard solely dedicated to Pelaverga Piccolo in 1972; a grape indigenous to the area. This essentially saved the grape from extinction and became the flagship wine for the grape variety.
Basadone takes its name from their local wild poppy; displayed on the label. According to the estate: “Only the beauty of a wild poppy manages to convey the fine complexity and harmonious characteristics of our Basadone”. The grapes are grown in two vineyards located in the village of Verduno; Massara and Olmo. The vineyards are south-east facing on white, limestone dominant soil. Harvest is completed entirely by hand, sorting and selecting only the finest bunches.
At the winery, maceration is completed over the course of 10 days in stainless steel tanks, with regular punch downs. The wine is aged for 9 months in steel and is bottled without fining or filtration. The wine is then aged in bottle for a minimum of 3 months before release. The wine is elegant with hints of potpuri like aromatics and a delicate, silky feel on the palate.
Taste
This is a dry, medium- bodied, bright and refreshing red wine. It is entirely red fruit driven; sour cherry, cranberry, red currant. There is some dried leaf and mushroom earth tones to the wine with some black pepper spice. It is a great wine to be served with a slight chill.
