Slowbeer

Slowbeer No longer in Smith St. New venue is at 10-12 Were St Montmornecy
The Grape and Hop Wine and Beer bar.
(244)

Having opened in September 2009, Slowbeer was the country’s first, 100% dedicated craft beer store. We focus our range on local microbreweries & more obscure imports from cult breweries around the world. Having closed our Fitzroy store in June 2023 we are currently searching for a new location in Melbourne's North East suburbs and accordingly trading online in the interim.

4 new arrivals that are worthy of your consideration. Details and tasting notes via the button below. Available on the website and also at The Grape & Hop Wine bar. In some instances the pricing will be sharper in-store as we don't need to subsidise freight charges.

All beers available online and via The Grape & Hop Wine Bar (10 - 12 Were St Montmorency Vic) Kaiju Aftermath DIPA $9 If not proper core range it's pretty close and I'm not sure many other breweries in this country can carry a 9% DIPA with 90 IBUs in the range most of the year. A ludicrously hop...

(For those who live in North East Melbs)

Many of us have been touched by Neale Daniher's passing this week. We really want to get behind the Fight MND fund raising so will be generating $2 per drink sold across a selected range of beers, wines, spirits and cocktails. Please drink generously (& sensibly) to this wonderful cause.

Our venue is the 'The Grape & Hop' located on Were Street in Montmorency.

To be honest I'm not that surprised. KBR have a mortgage on classic European styles in this country and the mortgage rachets up even more when you venture into Belgian and German territory. Well done Nathan, Sam and team.......absolutely well deserved.

440ml cans available on the website and in-store at The Grape & Hop in Montmorency.

A motley-looking crew this gang-of-4 aint!

KRB is very well-regarded, and rightly so, for new world takes on the most classic of Continental Europe styles. Indeed you could probably only count Sydney's Slow Lane Brewing as a true peer. The Kolsch, despite the general public's lack of appreciation for the style, has been an excellent performer for us both in packaged format and keg.

But, with that said, you will notice that 3 of the 4 beers in the pic are decidely modern and very fresh takes on very established styles. The Australian Independant IPA weighs in a little higher at 7.5% for the 2026 rendition but the uber-balanced malt/hop profile eats the booze up with ease. I've said before that the 2025 vintage was the best IPA we poured last year and I expect to be making similar claims, in due course, about the current version.

As we know single hop varietals are beer's answer to single vineyard wines but these builds usually get directed to IPAs. KRB have taken a different path opting to place the super fresh Luna and Galaxy hops into Wet Hopped Pale Ales. Goes without saying both are rippers.

Finally, a well deserved shout out for the 'Mabon', Australia's best Doppelbock. Coffee, toffee and plenty of malts. Good, but sensible, power in the palate at 7.5%.

Tasman IPA The Series: Beer 1 of 4

If you’re thinking we just made up a new beer style and called it Tasman IPA, you’re right, we did. Tasman IPAs are everything we love about West Coast IPAs, spliced together with the drinkability and dry hopping regime of Triple Dry Hopped NEIPAs. “Tasman IPA” is a nod to the pristine hop growing regions across the Tasman Sea and DJ’s adventures during his annual Boxing Day race across the Tasman.

The science bit: Tasman IPAs have reduced kettle hop additions, thus reducing base bitterness. The dry hops are added individually for predetermined contact times and completely removed before the next variety is added. This contact time, between 12-48 hours depending on hop variety, is considerably shorter than traditional IPAs. This creates an ultra clean hop profile.

The flavour bit: We’ve used our fave hops: Citra, Simcoe and Riwaka. Longer contact time for Citra and Simcoe give a rounded flavour base of citrus with a hint of pine, whilst the short, sizeable addition of Riwaka directly before crashing adds top notes of grapefruit and lime. -

“Like a facehugger, it’ll grab you with its light bitterness and won’t let go.
A smaller, zippier version of a West Coast IPA.
Its structural perfection is matched only by its out of this world aroma.”-
