In 1806, the Balance Columbia Repository newspaper was the first paper to cite the word "cocktail," defining the libation as a "stimulating liquor composed of any kind of sugar, waters and bitters." Cocktails have come a long way since 1806, but the core of the libation has always stayed the same.
