It’s September, which means it’s still 1000% humidity and hot, but I’m itching to dig into some red w**es that scream autumn! May I present these three w**es that just arrived in the store? I’m calling them “transitional reds.” They’re light- to medium-bodied, fresh and delicious, as comfortable with a light chill paired alongside summer vegetables as they will be with Thanksgiving fare. These guys will take us from these hot, back-to-school days all the way to the first snowfall (and beyond!). Check ‘em out!

Folktale ‘New Love’ Gamay 2024
Arroyo Seco, Monterey, California
This w**e may be your new love! This carbonic maceration Gamay is red-fruited, peppery, and light. The label art depicting the blossoming of a new love is from the 14th century Codex Menasse, a Germanic manuscript depicting art, songs and poetry. Aww!
$21.99

Lelièvre Côtes de Toul Pinot Noir 2023
Côtes de Toul AOC, Lorraine, France
This area near Alsace was once a well-known w**e region, but bombing from World War II decimated the industry here. There are gems like Lelièvre who are bringing w**egrowing back, with great quality and pricing. This Pinot is super vibrant thanks to the cool climate here, with fresh red raspberry and cherry tones.
Hot price! $19.99

Sindicat La Figuera Garnacha 2023
DO Montsant, Spain
La Figuera is one of the most distinctive villages in Montsant, perched high in the hills of Catalonia and prized for its old-vine Garnacha. These vines are 100+ years old! This is the biggest of the line-up, clocking in around 14%, but it drinks lighter and sees no oak aging, just six months in concrete vats. Ripe strawberry and pomegranate fill the glass with a sprinkle of wild herb. Juicy and delicious!

Santa Barbara W**e Country Tasting

Wednesday, September 23 at 6:30pm
Steve’s on Junction Road | 122 Junction Road, Madison
$20 per person; call us at 608-833-5995 to reserve your seat

Santa Barbara w**e country is known for a few things—of course, stunning w**es, gorgeous vistas, and a little 2004 movie called Sideways that increased w**e tourism to the area (and singlehandedly boosted Pinot Noir’s popularity and slowed Merlot sales ever since. Thanks, Paul Giamatti!). There is much to explore in this gorgeous county, including sub-regions like coastal Santa Rita Hills where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay shine; Ballard Canyon where you can find exceptional Syrah; Happy Canyon where we get some lovely Cabs; and Santa Ynez Valley which gives us great Sauvignon Blanc and a little of everything else. Expect a line-up as varied as the topography of the area.

Whether you’re planning a trip to Santa Barbara or didn’t even know they made w**e in Southern California, this tasting will give you a deeper understanding of the region and why it produces such a variety of delicious w**es. See you there!

Thirsty Thursday: You Can Call Me Albariño

Klinker Brick W**ery Albariño 2024
Mokelumne River, Central Valley, California

93 points & Best Buy, W**e Enthusiast

“This w**e is another excellent example of aromatic white w**e produced in an under-the-radar region. If you are an Albariño lover, this w**e should be in your glass.” -Tonya Pitts, W**e Enthusiast

Klinker Brick Albariño comes from Mokelumne River AVA in Lodi, California. This sub-AVA is the historical heart of Lodi, and it’s known for its very old vine Zinfandel (120 years plus!). Besides Zinfandel, Spanish varietals are popular here, including Albariño. Klinker Brick is one of the most respected w**eries in the area, the name an homage to the rich, dark-colored bricks once used in Lodi’s historic buildings, known for their strength, individuality, and durability. Klinker Brick owned and operated by the Felten family who has farmed this area for generations. The fruit comes from two of their estate vineyards, Ted’s Vineyard and Jungeblut Vineyard, where they grow a Rias Baixas clone.

Albariño (also called Alvarinho in Portugal) is native to the Iberian peninsula and is known for its fresh acidity and light body. Klinker Brick’s version definitely features those zesty characteristics. It has notes of fresh lemon, Persian lime, green papaya, apricot, and white peach, with undertones of minerality and white pepper plus a mouthwatering, dry finish. This is the perfect w**e for Friday night fish fry, pesto pasta, and salty appetizers like olives and Marcona almonds.

Thirsty Thursday: On Your Mar, Get Set, Go!

Sierra del Mar Chardonnay 2023
Clarksburg, California

90 points & Best Buy, W**e Enthusiast

Clarksburg AVA is located inland from the San Francisco Bay, with warm days that are balanced by the cool coastal fog and wind. The land here benefits from the rain and snowfall in the Sierra Nevada mountains, which flows to the Sacramento Delta, irrigating the vineyards along the way. The area is most famous for their Chenin Blanc, but they specialize in other white varietals, including Chardonnay.
Sierra del Mar Chardonnay is 100% Chardonnay aged in neutral French oak. This neutral oak imparts a smooth, velvety texture without giving it an over-the-top oaky, spicy character. The fruit flavors are ripe and juicy and call to mind passion fruit, mango, tangerine juice, baked apple, pear tart, and pineapple upside down cake. The finish is crisp and dry with touches of minerality. Pair with grilled salmon and mashed potatoes with herb butter or baked brie.

Zuccardi Poligonos Semillon 2021
Tupungato, Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina

94 points, James Suckling
94 points, Vinous Media
93 points, Descorchados
93 points, Tim Atkin

Familia Zuccardi produces this stunning single varietal Semillon from the Tupungato sub-zone in the north of Mendoza’s Uco Valley, which sits at nearly 4,000 ft. of elevation! This site is very unique as it has old pergola-trained Semillon vines planted in 1974. The w**e is aged in large, unroasted French oak barrels and undergoes no malolactic fermentation. These choices by the w**emaker are in service of preserving the grape’s natural freshness and tension. The palate is textured and plush with vibrant notes of citrus, melon, star fruit, and apricot, with flinty minerality and saline tones on the lingering finish. The exceptional acidity and structure give this w**e aging potential well beyond what its price point would suggest. It is drinking beautifully now and will continue to through at least 2028. Pair with seafood, poultry, or soft rind cheese.

Usually $35.00

Buckle up it's a massive week for new b**rs!

Today brings probably our biggest Other Half drop EVER, meaning 13 different fresh options of various haze and ABV. The fall seasonal train keeps rolling with a pretty diverse group. Among them, our first Festbier from Forbidden Root, an oak-aged Festbier from Modist, and Young Blood throwing their Tyrolean in the ring with Gus Polinski's Clarinet, also a Festbier. Two big boy pastry stouts from Side Project are on the shelf in Marble Lions (peanut butter/bananas/vanilla) and Revived (coconut/salt/coffee/vanilla), and Phase Three has spun off their West Coast IPA, Swells, into imperial and session versions. These and (obviously) more here now!
