Tasting Today - French Wines - 1:00 - 7:00pm

I had some fun travels over the last couple weeks, but now it is back to work and back to Saturday tastings. We have a fun one for you today with six really cool French wines. The two whites are from the Loire Vally and Jura, while the four reds hail from across the south of France and are made from the major Rhone Valley grape varieties. There is a great mix of styles with some fun underlying themes that pull them all together.

The whites move from crisp and racy to rich and a little nutty. The reds have a fantastic mix of old word earthiness with dark fruit flavors and spices. They build in power as you taste across the four of them. There is something for everyone in today’s tasting.

Today’s Lineup:

Anthony Gerard Quincy 2022
Domaine Dugois Savagnin Arbois 2022
Mylene Bru Cartouche 2023
Chateau Maris Le Zulu 2020

We won’t be having a tasting today at the shop because I’ll be at The Burlington Wine & Food Festival. We have a table at the event and will be pouring wine there. I was looking through the master list of wine last night and there is a lot of fun stuff to taste. At the time I’m writing this there are still tickets available for each session. (One starts at 12:30 and the other at 5:00)
Maybe we’ll see you there!

Tasting Today - Chardonnay & Pinot Noir - 1:00 - 7:00pm

We just brought in a Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the acclaimed Willamette Valley Vineyard, Abbott Claim. Some of the best wineries in Willamette Valley source grapes from Abbott Claim for their premium wines. The two wines we have are made by the vineyard owner themself and represent the vineyard beautiful. Simultaneously I’ve been working on bringing in some new Burgundy, so I decided to do a little comparison tasting of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The Willamette Valley Chardonnays are lighter and clean with ripe stone fruit flavors. The Macon from Burgundy is a bit more structured with acidity offering lift and liveliness. The Metz Road Chardonnay kicks in with a more full-throttle oaky expression with toasty notes on the nose and palate. For Pinot Noir the Willamette Valley wine is clearly more new world in nature with bright red berry fruit and the red Burgundy is beautifully elegant with depth and polish.

I hope to see you at the shop this afternoon.

Today’s Lineup:

Straight Shooter Chardonnay 2019
Mallory & Benjamin Talmud Macon 2022
Abbott Claim Chardonnay 2019
Metz Road Chardonnay Riverview Vineyard 2021
Domaine du Prieure Savigny-Les-Beaune 2022
Abbott Claim Pinot Noir 2019

Tasting Today - Wines from F&F Selections - 1:00 - 7:00pm

Today we are headed to California with wines from F&F Selections. As the word “selections” in their name might imply, this company does not make wines but instead seeks them out. The Owner, Brandon Farrell, scours California looking for great winemakers producing small production wines that are unmistakably California, but polished and elegant. These wines represent the best of New World wine production, celebrating ripeness and purity of fruit while maintaining balance and complexity.

This tasting has a beautiful progression. The whites pull you in with crisp acidity surrounded by bright, clean fruit. The Pinot Noir grabs you with its texture and lively red fruit flavors as you build towards a crescendo of depth and opulence with their Nebbiolo. These are some really great wines that pair wonderfully with another rainy Saturday. The wines aren’t cheap and they deserve the prices they fetch, but at the tasting today we’ll be offering sale pricing of $10 to $15 dollars off every bottle.

I hope to see you at the shop this afternoon.

Tasting Today - Portugal - 1:00 - 7:00pm

The Portugal section in the shop was getting a little thin, so we brought in some new wines this week that we’ll be sharing at today’s tasting. Portugal is a fun wine region with more variety than it is often given credit for. It can combine big fruit and body with rustic, old world undertones. Then there is a newer wave of wines that are light, delicate and racy. There is also a lot in between...

We’ll start today with two whites, the first has a rich texture with firm acidity running through it and the second, made from Alvarinho, is bright and electric on the palate. The reds build from a light and easy blend of Syrah, Touriga Nacional & Alicante Boushcet to a full-bodied structure wine made from the same grapes but with the addition of oak aging. The last red switches to all traditional Portuguese varietals, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Sousao, that embraces the rustic side of things. This is a fun look at Portugal and the wines progress nicely as you work through them.

I hope to see you at the shop this afternoon.

Foral Alvarinho Old Vines 2024
Guarda Rios Red Blend 2020

They also all pair beautifully with a rainy spring day, so come by and give them a try.

Tasting Today - Rioja - 1:00 - 7:00pm

We have quite a lineup for you today. I noticed that the vintages had changed on a couple of my favorite Rioja producers and wanted to taste them. Rather than keep the fun all to myself, I thought we could check them out together. Take a look at the wines below. This should be a good one.

I hope to see you at the shop this afternoon.

Tasting Today - Sancerre - 1:00 - 7:00pm

As the weather very slowly begins to shift towards spring, I have been looking to beef up our Sancerre supply. This sub-region of the Loire Valley has seen a spike in popularity over the last five years and at times it has been tough to keep them in stock. I brought in a few extra cases this week and thought it would be fun to taste through some of these wines next to each other.

Sancerre’s Sauvignon Blancs have historically be known for their crisp acidity and mineral undertones. In recent years warming weather has caused a bit of a shift with many Sancerres showing a bit more fleshy stone fruit flavors and a rounder, richer palate. Today we will try four whites from two different vintages, 2022 and 2023. It will be a fun side-by-side comparison. We’ll finish things off with a red Sancerre made from Pinot Noir. The reds from the region are lesser known but can be spectacular in the own right.

I hope to see you at the shop this afternoon.

Today’s Lineup:
Maison de Madeleine Sancerre 2022
Emile Balland Sancerre 2023
Roger Neveu Sancerre Pierre Francois Xavier 2022
La Moussiere Sancerre 2023
Domaine Gerard Millet Sancerre Rouge 2022

Tasting Today - European Grab Bag - 1:00 - 7:00pm

For a number of weeks our tastings have been touring around Europe and the Mediterranean. In the process of sampling around to find wines for these tastings, there were a handful of great wines that I couldn’t fit in. Today we’ll be featuring five of these exciting new wines. They hail from Spain, Italy, Austria and Slovenia.

We’ll begin with a white Rioja that is crisp on the attack before offering lush white, fleshy fruit on the mid-palate and finish, followed by a Txakolina rosé with electric red berry fruit and a dancy mouthfeel. For reds we’ll start with a Slovenian red blend that’s a bit wild in all the right ways, followed by a St. Laurent from Austria that is sultry and polished. Lastly, we have an Italian Barbaresco that celebrates the brooding and rustic side of the Nebbiolo grape. This is a fun one where the wines makes sense to taste side-by-side despite their geographical separation.

I hope to see you at the shop this afternoon.

Today’s Lineup:
Manzanos Rioja Bianco 2022
Ameztoi Txakolina Rose 2024
Slavcek Crno Red Cuvee 2019

Tasting Today - Italian Wines- 1:00 - 7:00pm

Well this week happened. I’ve been getting a lot of tariff questions at the shop. The on-again, off-again nature makes it hard to predict the future, but if the current tariffs are to stay in place, we would have business as usual for the coming weeks and maybe months, then supply issues and price increases will begin as the summer progresses and we move into the fall. For now, I’ll be focusing our tastings on imported wines as much as possible and today we will stay in the mediterranean with wines from across Italy. This is a pretty cool lineup of unique wines from north, central and southern Italy.

The white wines start with a racy but rich Fiano from Campania and then move north to a rich, fleshy fruited wine from Orvieto in central Italy. We’ll finish with a beautiful and aromatic Viognier out of Piedmont. For the reds, we’ll start in the south again with an Aglianico del Vulture that is rustic and structured, then move up to Tuscany for a wonderful multi-vintage blend of Sangiovese and a Toscana Rosso from La Massa, a renowned producer in Tuscany. These are some pretty serious wines with bottle aging that has allowed them to achieve impressive concentration and complexity. It should be a fun one.

I hope to see you at the shop this afternoon.

Today’s Lineup:
Rocca del Principe Fiano di Avellino “Tognano” 2017
Palazzone Campo del Guardiano Orvieto 2019
Agricola Ferraris Viognier Piemonte 2021
San Martino Aglianico del Vulture “Arberesko” 2021

Tasting Today - Hungary & Turkey - 1:00 - 7;00pm

We have had a lot of fun hopping around the Mediterranean over the last few weeks. Today we’ll continue that theme and work our way east with wines from Hungary and Turkey. We’ll be tasting some lesser-known grapes varieties that are common to the regions, like Narince, Furmint, Kadarka, Okuzgozu & Kalecik Karaasi. Sometimes wines made from more obscure grapes can become more academic than pleasurable to taste, but these wines have great complexity and intrigue while still being easy to enjoy. It looks like the snow is largely done for the day, so we hope you can make it in and taste through these exciting wines.

We’ll begin with a wine made from Narince that offers loads of minerality and stone fruit flavors in a dry, lively palate. Next is a Furmint that takes on a richer profile with layers of bruised fruits and spices unfolding as you taste it. Turning to reds we have a Kadarka that is very light in body and color but packed full of red berry fruits and does great with a bit of a chill. Next is a blend of Syrah (our one familiar grape of the day) and Kalecik Karasi that captures your attention with its dense darker fruits and we’ll end things with a blend of Okuzgozu and Kalecik Karasi with a delicacy that luls you into complacency before a plethora of red fruit and warm spices comes rushing in.

I hope to see you at the shop this afternoon.

Today’s Lineup:
Sevilen Nativus Narince 2022
Kiralyudvar Tokajo Furmint Sec 2020
Sebestyen Szekszard Kadarka 2021
Sevilen Majestik Syrah/Kalecik Karasi 2021
