Tasting Today - Old World Wines - 1:00 - 7:00pm

Today we have a fun mix of wines from across Europe (plus one quick pit stop in Uruguay...). There are a couple favorites of mine that aren’t going to be carried in Vermont anymore, so I scooped up what I could, and some new wines for the shelves.

We will begin with a pair of white wines from Hungary and Austria. Furmint is a common white grape in Hungary and well be pouring a dry expression with lively acidity (it is also used for their famous dessert wines). The Austrian white is, of course, Gurner Veltliner, king of the Austrian white grape varieties. Moving to reds we have a Tuscan Sangiovese from Capanna, one of my favorite central Italian producers, followed by a Tannat from Uruguay that I’ve loved and carried for a while, but we can now offer at almost $10 off its original price. We’ll end things in Spain with a Ribera del Duero that is rich and generous, then a Rioja Reserva that is deliciously old-school with 8 years of barrel and bottle aging.

Tasting Today - Italy and an Albatiño - 1:00 - 7:00pm

Today’s tasting is going to focus on some new Italian arrivals that we brought in this week, but I also had to sneak in a fantastic Albariño that is new to us as well. The two Italian whites hail from the northern and southern reaches of Italy, while the two reds are right in the heart of Tuscany. We have some pretty exciting wines for you today.

First off we’ll pour the Spanish Albariño. I’ve been looking for one to replace a couple that have been out of stock and this blew my socks off. It is racy but rich, dry but full-of-fruit, truly a wine with balance and wonderful tension. From there it’s all Italy with and elegant, complex Arneis from Piedmont and a wild, bursting-with-aromatics-and-flavor Verdeca from Puglia. Transitioning to reds we have two Tuscan wines from the fantastic 2021 vintage. First is a Chianti Classico that is delightfully rustic with brambly red berry fruit and spice notes. That is followed by a brooding Brunello di Montalcino that is a steal at just $39.99...well a steal for Brunello di Montalcino anyway. These are some pretty great wines we have for you today.

Tasting Today - Cabernet Sauvignon Blanc - 1:00 - 7:00pm

Today we are pouring Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, hence the title “Cabernet Sauvignon Blanc”....The two Sauvignon Blancs offer a fun comparison of New Zealand and California, while the Cabernets compare and contrast California with Australia. I’ve also chosen wines with a good bit of bottle aging for today’s tasting to add a bit of intrigue.

We will begin with a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand that is lively with citrus notes but hails from Hawkes Bay in the north island as opposed to the more commonly seen Marlborough wines, giving it a unique perspective. This is followed by a Sauvignon Blanc from Edna Valley that has some fun jalapeño notes on the nose and clean, stone fruit flavors. For Cabernet we start in Australia, first with an easy, inexpensive red from South Australia, then a bolder more intricate wine from Australia’s renowned Margaret River in Western Australia. These are followed by two Cabernets from Happy Canyon, a warmer, dry area of Santa Barbara known for their rich and concentrated Cabernets. These wines are both from the 2016 vintage and the ten years of barrel and bottle aging have brought them to a beautiful place of harmony and complexity.

Tasting Today - Big New Deals - 1:00 - 7:00pm

This week we bought-in on a number of wines for our case stacks. Among them were some pretty fantastic deals that we’re excited to share with you at today’s tasting. The wines hail from California, Oregon, France and Spain. There is a good bit of variety but there is one common thread, each one is showing a fantastic discount.

We will begin with a Spanish Garnacha Blanca the has a rich palate of stone fruits and a finish that lingers long. Next is a Willamette Valley Chardonnay that is full-bodied with a kiss of toasty oak, ripe tropical fruit flavors and a clean, racy finish. For reds we’ll start with a lighter French Merlot with earthy, mushroomy nuances and bright red berry fruit flavors. Next we head to California for a dense, dark fruited Syrah from Paso Robles before finishing things off with a pricy, but less pricy today, Napa Valley Cabernet. This will be a fun one.

Tasting Today - Central Coast Wines - 1:00 - 7:00pm

Today we’ll be heading to the Central Coast of California. I recently started working with Joyce Vineyards and have been impressed by their ability to produce lively, balanced wines that still delivery the ripeness of California. Today we will be featuring some of their wines along with a few other like-minded producers.

We will begin today with two wines from Arroyo Seco. Joyce Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc and Albarino are two piercing, vivid whites. The Sauvignon Blanc has some of the fun, exotic flavor profiles the grape variety can express and the Albarino is racy with a bit of salinity. Next is a Paso Robles Sauvignon Blanc that offers a richer, more fruit-forward flavors profile, followed by a Santa Barbara Chardonnay that totally over delivers at its modest price point. For reds we’ll first head back to Arroyo Secco for a red berry and spice explosion called Joyce Pinot Noir. Then we’ll finish things off back in Paso Robles with a dark-fruited Cabernet that shows fantastic balance and length.

Tasting Today - Great New Deals - 1:00 - 7:00pm

This week we snatched up some fantastic deals on some pretty serious wines. At today’s tasting we are featuring a selection of these wines, from a sub $10 white for the porch to a $55 Super Tuscan we’ll be selling at half that price. This is a really fun mix of wines with incredible pricing that we’ll only be offering today.

We will begin with a simple and delightful New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc that was made for the summer, then pour an orange wine from Spain that has fantastic depth and texture. For reds we’ll start with a French Cinsault that is delicate on the palate but bursting with wild fruit flavors and earthy undertones. We’ll finish off with a pair of Italian wines, a Barbera from Piedmont brimming with bright red berry fruit and playful spice notes and a powerful Super Tuscan from the prestigious Fattoria Le Pupile. These are some great wines that will all be around half off their regular prices today.

Tasting Today - Wines of France - 1:00 - 7:00pm

The dust is settling from a busy few weeks so let the tastings resume. Today we are tasting through France and covering a lot of bases. With wines from the Loire Valley, Alsace, Bordeaux, Côtes du Rhône and Provence, There is something for everybody in this lineup, and they are all wines I’d love to take home for myself.

We will begin in Alsace with a Pinot Blanc that has wonderful depth and texture while maintaining fantastic acidity and stone fruit flavors. From there we move to the Loire Valley for a Chenin Blanc based white that is piercing and electric on the palate. Next we head down to Provence for a rosé that offers wonderful red berry fruit flavors and a crisp, dry profile. After that we’re back up to the Loire Vally for a racy Gamay with warming spice notes supporting its more playful and fruity notes. We then head to Côtes du Rhône for one of the better values in reds that I’ve come across in a while and finish things off in Bordeaux with a powerful and structured Merlot based blend. There were so many good options this week that I couldn’t choose just five wines.

Tasting Today - New Old-World Wines - 1:00 - 7:00pm

We just brought in a number of new imported wines that we are excited to share with you. Today we’ll be pouring two wines from northeast Italy and Valpolicella, a Loire Valley Cabernet Franc, a Spanish Verdejo and a Bordeaux style blend from Cotes du Marmandais just to the south of Bordeaux proper. These wines exude the quality, complexity and variety of the Old World.

First off is.a Soave from northeast Italy that is bright and lively with a beautiful texture and depth. Next is a Spanish Verdejo that is rich and full of fruit but still dry and refreshing. For reds we’ll start in the Loire Valley with a Cabernet Franc that brings in all the fun parts of the grape variety without taking the green vegetal and spice side of things too far. From there we’ll head back to northeast Italy for a Valpolicella with fantastic intensity and concentration before finish things off with a wine from Cotes du Marmandais. This is a region just south of Bordeaux that is often overlooked but offers Bordeaux style reds of incredible value.

Tasting Today - Wines of Southern France - 1:00 - 7:00pm

Today we have wines from southern France to explore. Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre are ;the grapes to know and all of the wines are made from a combination of these varieties. The Rosé is one of my favorites of the season and the reds are all wonderfully rustic while offering a bit more ripeness thanks to the warmer climate of southern France.

I’ve noticed that the 2025 rosés of France seem to be drinking really well and the Domaine Bargemone that we’ll start things off with is no exception. There is fantastic bright red berry fruit supported by racy acidity and a refreshing dryness. The reds do a great job of illustrating the beauty of warmer and Mediterranean influenced regions in the old world. They combine the earthiness you’d expect from France with a bit more ripeness of fruit at the core. This gives them fantastic complexity and balance at reasonable prices. They will be a lot of fun to taste through and compare the different blends and sub-regions.

Tasting Today - Wines of Piedmont - 1:00 - 7:00pm

Today we will be pouring wines from one of our favorite regions, Piedmont. This northern Italian region is home to the prestigious Barolo and Barbaresco wines, but there are tons of fantastic wines at friendlier prices that totally over deliver in complexity and quality. Beautifully “Old World” with power and finesse, these wines aren’t to be missed.

We’ll begin the tasting with our one white of the day made from the Arneis grape. Seen almost exclusively in Piedmont, this grape makes wines that are crisp and dry but with a great mouthfeel and wonderful stone fruit flavors. From there we have a pair of Barberas with the first presenting more earthy and rustic and the second offering elegance and depth. After that we have a Nebbiolo that celebrates the grape varieties dual nature of power and delicacy. Finally we’ll finish things off with a Piedmont inspired blend from California that shows how the Barbera and Nebbiolo grapes present when grown in a warmer, “New World” region. It’s a cool juxtaposition and point of reference. This should be a fun one.
