Tasting Notes - Pelissero Multiple Vintage Single Vineyard Barbaresco Tasting back to 2015 ....

Its all very well to taste a w**e in the barrel or on release - and even to buy a w**e based on its rating, but it all comes down to what the actual consumer thinks when they lay down the green...

A singular happy circumstance in relation to changing w**e world consumer habits is that small volumes of vintages get "forgotten" in the cellar as the world turns, half-term elections come and go and Katie Price tweaks her cosmetic enhancements and/or matrimonial status.

Assuredly Barbaresco is a style that benefits greatly from some extra years in the bottle, but being able to look at Giorgio's 2015 and 2019's side by side last night was a whole lot more fun than making popcorn and prepping my sedatives ahead of next Tuesday's All American Circus.

Below is the lineup of what we looked at last night - along with their respective numbering in case you want to follow them in the video recording above.

I have thrown down my dusty memories from the w**es themselves as well. There are some revelations from the tasting - not least of which is how good the 2019's is looking relative to 2015's. I guess its the Bordeaux ho in me that would reach for the 2015 always ahead of the 2019 - but not the case here. There is a form and settled gravitas about the 2019's that is stunningly impressive - especially with the Pelissero Nubiola 2019 (AG 94) @ $61. The 2015's by contrast are brighter, nervier and a lot more about red fruit than black. Certainly they are siblings but the old school style and calm were massively impressive to me.

I am not sure if Giorgio was entirely thrilled with me when I pointed out the this Galloni rating is equal to the rating of the Tre Bicchieri award winning Pelissero Vanotu 2019 (AG 94) @ $111, but it made for fascinating comparison nonetheless - even if I am off the Xmas Card list from the cognoscenti.

It wasn't the first time and almost definitely wont be the last - I am blaming El Nino ...

Long gone are the days where Aunt Mabel secretly skulled her own bottle of rose at family gatherings, or when teenagers cut (and sometimes broke) their teeth on their first boozy night out with Mateus Rose. My mum still goes all glassy-eyed with nostalgia when she see's one of those curvy shaped bottles that still sells over 20 million bottles per year. Thats one heck of a lot of hungover teenagers...

Urban legend has it that Jimmy Hendrix was the very first example of product placement with a bottle of Mateus Rose - although rumour has it there was a bloke from Galilee who did a lot more for the w**e industry a few 100 years earlier with his yet-to-be duplicated w**e making efforts when a wedding ran out...

People tend to choose their favourites much like those who choose a football team, with very little mid-season transfers from what I can see. The dry straw-like Provence style rose has held pride of place amongst global sales for a while now, but there are diversions into the intensely flavoured Garnacha`s of Spain, or the regal swathes of Cabernet Franc from South Africa...

Barbara Widmar`s family business is now looking at its 30th vintage in the rear-view mirror and what a ride it has been so far. Its clear that Brancaia has carved out a reputation for themselves amongst a crowded and supremely elite field of producers.

We are excited to present these releases which provides limited amounts of vintages going back to 2019 ...

The thing about Brancaia is how brilliantly they evolve 3 to 5 years after release. It lands on the client's dinner table after slumbering on the infamous trailing spouse shelf - secure in the knowledge that it hasn't cost terribly much and can be opened spontaneously without any matrimonial pearl-clutching afterwards.

It embodies a trademark rich glossiness of spirit and body that you will remember long after the candles are blown out and the aforementioned travelling spouse has gone to bed because of their early flight in the morning.

How does it Work?:

Think of it like a reverse auction. In markets like this where there is more w**e than buyers, this allows the buyers to set the liquidation rate (ie. what they are prepared to pay) rather than the auction house.

How Do You Work Out the Value of my W**es?:

We evaluate your w**es based on available retail pricing relative to offshore, and come up with a realistic spread of high and low.

Do I Retain Control?:

Yes - its your w**es and therfor you call. Once we have agreed the pricing spread mentioned above we do not go below that price level unless specifically instructed by you once you see market liquidity during the sale.

Such is the nature of our platform that we get to pick and choose which labels we show every year, with a small percentage being w**eries that we buy every year no matter what.

As Forest Gump so famously said - its a real box of chocolates with oftentimes the chocolate turning out to be the wh***ey orange flavoured one that only one's saintly spinster aunt tolerates after her fifth glass of ch*****ne on Christmas morning.

With Blank Canvas not only is there consistency but the general feeling that each year presents better and better results. This vintage of Blank Canvas Reed Chardonnay 2025 is one such shining example. Between the sell out of our first shipment of this vintage and the arrival of the second last week - the Suckling ratings have come out with a rating of 96/100 for this year.

I guess this w**e really hit its straps with the 2022 in terms of global perspective when it was named ‘White W**e of the Year’ for 2023 by UK based Masters of W**e Peter Richards MW and Susie Barrie MW.

Their ratings are yet to come out for this vintage - but given what is happening already with local demand and Suckling's results - we are in for a storm of demand this time again.

I want to stick in an honourable mention for the Blank Canvas Escaroth Pinot Noir 2022 [JS 97] @ $50. - Highest Suckling Rating Ever. As luck would have it - we only secured 24 of these and there is little doubt in my mind that between the Fast Track early offer this morning and today's note - there will not be a huge amount by the end of the day...

With the volume of Marketplace w**es hitting my inbox for evaluation at the moment, I am seeing a lot of WA premium Cabernet up for consideration on the world pricing platforms. There is little doubt that once a cabernet from Margs grows a few whiskers - their prices are more upwardly mobile than your average teenage TokTock influencer ...

I would love to say that its something more interesting than having just been forgotten in the back dusty realm of our website - but thats all it is. We have been holding this cabernet for three years in perfect cellaring conditions at a price thats a lot more compelling than watching said influencer explain tearfully why she broke up with the one - after a profoundly deep and meaningful 3 week commitment...

Look for a gentle softening in all the right tannic places and an emergence into the light of both vibrant black and red fruit. These extra years bonus have left us with only one question as consumers - How much can we get into the house by volume while our long suffering spouses are a Mahjong and escape the usual derision for going crazy long...?
