New vintages by Atlasland!

Vineyards come in many different shapes around the world. From amphitheatre-shaped ones, to pergola systems where grapes abound above your head, and the peculiar basket vines of Santorini. Throughout time, winemakers have found resourceful ways to cultivate vines and adapt them to local climatic conditions. But let us not forget that true resilience and diversity come from nature herself.

On our first visit to Atlas Land, our attention was caught by a few old vines scattered around the vineyard that grew in ways we had never seen before. The sturdy trunks of these vines seem to “dive” underneath the soil, only to then emerge above the surface a few meters further away.

The existence and lushness of these wayward vines is telling of the winemaker’s approach. Filippo found his way from the hills of Northern Italy to the Portugese coast region of Algarve and treats the land here with utmost care and grace. The wines he produces from indigenous grapes - including, but certainly not limited to, Castelão, Boal Branco en Crato Branco - all carry a compelling and distinct elegance and minerality. As if he wants us to lean in and pay close attention when we drink them.

The season is ripe for Filippo’s wines. White asparagus, barbecued fish, a day in the park, all will welcome their zesty and palatable character.

New vintages by Radikon!

Exactly two years ago, we wrote about Radikon and the herculean task facing the winery after the death of Stanko Radikon in 2016, a powerhouse of the orange wine movement. We wrote about the old and the new, how the next generation is keeping the spirit of the father alive while innovating with new wines. Now is the time to follow up on this and update you on current developments at the winery.

Some of you may already have spotted the new line of wines on our Radikon shelves. Since autumn 2024, Radikon has counted the POP wines among its arsenal. Hailing from newly acquired vineyards in Slovenia, these wines burst with energy and character. While the POP Bianco provides an accessible introduction to Radikon’s distinctive orange wines, the POP Rosso is a fruit-forward, juicy red that is sure to appeal to many.

What’s more, in the spirit of innovation, Radikon has also been revisiting its more established wines. Their eye-catching blue line, for example, has been subject to some tweaks. From the 2020 vintage onwards, the winemakers, Ivana and Saša, have added a little sulphite to their wines at bottling time. You might ask yourself: Does this represent a departure from their deeply held beliefs around low-intervention winemaking? In our opinion, this is a wise decision that demonstrates resilience and an ability to think beyond dogma. Adding a small amount of sulphite at the final stage ensures stability, meaning people can enjoy Radikon wines consistently at home without them losing their energy and vibrant fruit character. In addition, minimal use of sulphite will reduce people’s aversion to ‘funky’ wines and hence encourage them to try our Radikon selection.
