This week's producer spotlight is a very special one — and almost embarrassingly close to home.
Meet Palmers Brewery, based in Bridport, Dorset — just along the coast from us. They've been brewing fine ales on the same site since 1794, which makes them one of the oldest breweries in the country. The Gundry family built the original brewery on the banks of the River Brit, the Palmer brothers bought it in the late 19th century, and their descendants are still involved in the business today. Over 230 years, same site, same dedication to doing it properly.
A few things that make Palmers genuinely special: they're the only thatched brewery in the UK, they brew using water from their own naturally rising spring, and every ale is made with the finest Maris Otter malt and carefully selected whole leaf hops — the traditional way, as it's been done for generations.
We stock a selection of their bottled ales here at The Cave, including the golden and fruity Dorset Gold, the award-winning Palmers 200, and the remarkable Tally Ho! — a strong, nutty dark ale that's been brewed since 1949 and has built a devoted following over the decades.
If you're a real ale fan, or you've simply never tried a Palmers and want to put that right, come in and the team will be happy to point you in the right direction. Great British brewing, right on our doorstep. 🍺
