For centuries, sailors in Britain’s Royal Navy were issued a daily ration of rum, known as the “tot.”

The tradition lasted until 31 July 1970, when the final ration was served and the practice was officially abolished.

The date has been remembered ever since as Black Tot Day, marking the end of one of the Royal Navy’s longest-running traditions.
