Yemen fighting live: Battles rage between Houthi and Saudi-backed forces

Forces loyal to Yemen’s internationally recognised government launch counterattacks against the Houthi rebels, with officials saying they aim to recapture the capital, Sanaa, from the Iran-backed group.

At least 73 civilians are wounded in Houthi strikes on cities and economic infrastructure in southern Saudi Arabia as Riyadh warns against continuing attacks.

The Houthis say they repelled an offensive in al-Jawf, and at least seven people were killed in an air strike on a prison in the town of al-Hazm, pledging the “aggression will not go unpunished”.

The hostilities mark the most serious escalation in war-weary Yemen since a United Nations-brokered truce halted large-scale fighting in 2022.

Brent crude climbs after reports of Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia

$100 oil is back in traders’ crosshairs.

Brent crude futures are rising back to that threshold this morning after attacks from the Iran-backed Houthis wounded dozens of people at undisclosed civilian and economic sites in Saudi Arabia, Saudi state media reported. Brent crude futures jumped beyond $99 a barrel—their highest level since July.

Anxiety about higher energy prices is nudging bond yields higher, with the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield crossing 4.8% again. Futures pegged to the Dow are lower, with S&P 500 futures also in the red and the Nasdaq modestly higher, broadly in line with a downbeat session overseas.

Meanwhile, the yen is strengthening further, sending it to its strongest level since February. The Japanese currency has been lifted recently by growing expectations of a rate hike by the Bank of Japan this month, with hotter-than-expected Japanese wage numbers today adding further momentum.

Another corner of the market that is also heating up this morning: copper futures, which hit a new record amid concerns that President Trump could place new import taxes on refined copper. On the trade front, Canada's retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on certain American products take effect today.

Looking ahead, the focus for the week is Friday's consumer price index report for August. Economists expect it to show headline inflation held at an annual rate of 3.4%.

The US Navy reportedly engaged in a risky, top-secret four-month mission to clear mines from the bottom of the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian forces have set mines across the crucial waterway, through which one-fifth of the world's oil supply traverses, ever since the US and Israel attacked the country back in February.
