Dunlap says heating oil price spike will hit Maine families hard this winter

The price of home heating oil in Maine is rising as the seasons change, and Congressional District 2 candidate Matt Dunlap says many people cannot afford it.

Dunlap said at a press conference Tuesday that no state depends on home heating oil more than Maine. He said the war in Iran pushed prices to around $5 a gallon in March, a spike he said will make this winter hundreds of dollars more expensive for working families.

Dunlap criticizes war spending. Dunlap argued that Washington finds “endless money” for war overseas. He said he will not support more war spending while people in Maine are choosing between heat and groceries.

Dunlap is calling for full funding of the federal LIHEAP heating assistance program and long-term investment in renewables. He said many families cannot afford to switch systems and are stuck with high-priced oil.

Global shares are mostly lower as Brent crude surpasses $100 a barrel

Global shares were mostly lower in cautious trading Wednesday as investors watched for what might happen on interest rates and the war with Iranpushed the price of a barrel of Brent crude oil past $100.Increased fighting in the Middle East is constricting the global flow of oil and more costly oil has worsened worries over high inflation.

As of 0930 GMT, Brent crude, the international standard, was up 2.5% at $100.39 a barrel. Benchmark U.S. crude gained 1.9% to $94.85 a barrel.

France’s CAC 40 lost 1.1% in early trading to 8,224.46, while the German DAX declined 0.9% to 25,778.91. Britain’s FTSE 100 shed 0.5% to 10,761.27. The future for the S&P 500 was nearly unchanged, while that for the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.2%.
