A new limited-edition from the Black Works Studio brand has arrived!

“The Culture Vulture represents a whole new level for Black Works Studio. It’s unlike anything we’ve created before, from the artwork and overall concept to the construction of the cigar itself. From the first look, the dual wrapper grabs your attention with an ‘Ombré’-style fade that moves from green to yellow and back to green, highlighting the contrast between the Candela and Habano wrappers.

The artwork was created alongside the cigar, with both designed to capture the same bold, unconventional energy. For me, the visual identity and the cigar itself must work together—they’re both part of telling the story.

But the real story is in the profile. This is, without question, the boldest profile we’ve ever created for Black Works. There’s an intensity and depth to it that feels completely unique and pushes the boundaries of what we’ve done before. Joya Black

The Joya Black certainly lives up to its name in looks, with a dark, rough, oily wrapper that’s finished off with a striking black and blue label that has an almost carbon fiber looking design along the edge. There’s not much give when squeezed, but enough to keep it from being what I would call hard. Bringing the cigar to my nose I get big and bold notes of earth, leather, musty hay and a touch of smoky, old wood. The cold draw is completely different, with a fruity fig note up front, some sweetness and cocoa, finishing off with a meaty undertone.

Lighting the Joya Black and starting into the first third, I’m greeted with bold spices up front, followed by sweet fruits, cocoa and a touch of the aged wood and pepper in the background. The burn starts off almost razor sharp and even, with dense ash that gives me the impression it will be sticking around a while. About an inch into the cigar and a strong nutty note appears alongside the spice, almost hazelnut but not quite.

The Big Sky Blackfoot derives its name from the renowned Blackfoot River, a beloved trout stream weaving through the picturesque landscapes of Montana. In its quest to capture the essence of this natural beauty, the Blackfoot cigar takes the STARS on a flavorful journey. Alec Bradley Magic Toast

The story is that Alan Rubin, the company’s founder, and Ralph Montero, a partner in Alec Bradley, went to visit a to***co field in the middle of the night. While there, they toasted to the company’s future. Rubin recalls the event as magical, hence the name Magic Toast. Some of the to***co used in the blend is from that very field. The rest comes from Nicaragua.

On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the darkest wrapper you will ever see on a cigar, this is a solid 8.5. The Honduran wrapper seems to absorb all the light around it. It’s not too often purple is used on cigar bands, but it really stands out in a paint scheme that reminds me of Halloween. Aroma from the wrapper smells like I’m walking through a room full of resting to***co with barnyard, acidity and a bit of graham cracker. The foot is fuller and sweeter with oatmeal cookie and some vanilla ice cream over the barnyard flavors. The first thing that stands out about the cold draw is the amount of resistance: the draw is excellent. Flavor-wise it’s medium-full with some sweet meaty flavors—almost like cheap beef jerky—some fruitiness and some sweet oranges and berries.

Foundation Charter Oak Shade

In an homage to his home state, Foundation Cigar Co. owner Nicholas Melillo based the line off The Charter Oak – a large tree that stood in Hartford, Conn., which was believed to have stood from the 12th century until the 1850s, at which point it was destroyed by a storm. A symbol of independence and an icon in Connecticut, it’s an appropriate name to give a cigar paying tribute to the state.

In addition to the state, Melillo had this to say about the release:

“Charter Oak also pays tribute to my grandfather, who while earning a modest salary working for the Wi******er Repeating Arms factory after WWII, smoked exclusively broadleaf ci**rs manufactured by FD Graves on State St., while, no joke, Rick Ardito’s grandfather, a guard at Wi******er, also smoked FD Graves’ biggest selling broadleaf, Muniemakers. I wanted to create an economy-minded, everyday smoke for connoisseurs; something tasty and delicious but didn’t break the bank.”

Big Sky Madison

When discussing the large multitude of countries and U.S. states where cigar brands have been founded, Montana is probably not high on most people’s list. However, Billings, Mont.-based Big Sky Cigar Co. has been aiming to change that perception since it was founded in 2019. The company with three different blends, each named after a different river in the state: The Bighorn, The Madison and The Yellowstone. Two new creations were added to Big Sky’s lineup in May 2021: a fourth river-themed 6 x 54 creation named Bitterroot and a 4 3/4 x 44 short salomon the company dubbed Mad Minnow.

One of those original blends in Big Sky’s River Series was a 6 1/4 x 52 toro named The Madison after the Madison River, which is a 183-mile tributary of the Missouri River that runs through both Montana and Wyoming. The cigar is made up of a habano wrapper covering a San Andrés binder from Mexico and filler to***cos hailing from the four growing regions in Nicaragua: Condega, Esteli, Jalapa and Ometepe. As is the case with the rest of Big Sky’s creations, The Madison is rolled at the Tacasa S.A. factory in Estelí, Nicaragua.

Earlier this year, West Tampa To***co Co. began shipping the third and final release in the Cook Book Series, a 6 x 52 toro named Chef Rick. Blend-wise, the cigar is made with a habano 2000 wrapper from an undisclosed country covering an Ecuadorian Sumatra-seed binder and filler to***cos grown in the Condega, Estelí, Jalapa and Ometepe regions of Nicaragua. It is made at Tabacalera Pages de Nicaragua S.A.

“A great culinary chef requires technical mastery, immense passion and creativity,” said Rick Rodriguez, co-founder of West Tampa Cigar in a press release. “I also wanted to take the opportunity to partner with a young up and coming factory, Tabacalera Pages de Nicaragua S.A., to close out this trilogy. Having the opportunity to work alongside Raymond Pages Raffo allowed me to bring something new and unique to my fans.”

Nica Rustica Shade

In 2013, Drew Estate introduced a new line named Nica Rustica that was made with a Connecticut broadleaf mediums wrapper over a Mexican San Andrés negro binder and filler to***cos grown in Nicaragua. The line debuted in one vitola—a 6 x 52 toro—but additional sizes were periodically added to the line. However, it turns out that Drew Estate was far from satisfied with releasing only one version of Nica Rustica. Nine years later, the original line was renamed Nica Rustica Broadleaf and the company added the Nica Rustica Adobe line, which uses an Ecuadorian habano wrapper over a Brazilian binder and fillers from Nicaragua.

In 2025, Drew Estate announced the third incarnation of the Nica Rustica line. Named Nica Rustica Shade, the new blend is made with an Ecuadorian Connecticut-seed wrapper grown under shade, while the binder comes from Mexico, and the filler to***cos are grown in the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Pennsylvania.

“This is the perfect addition to the Nica Rustica family,” said W***y Herrera, master blender for Drew Estate, in a press release. “It’s a cigar that’s very different from any of our other Connecticut shades; it’s for pretty much everybody. It has flavor, so the seasoned smoker is going to enjoy it, but the beginner is also going to enjoy that cigar.”
