Varvaglione is a family owned and operated winery, and was kind enough to do a tasting with us a little while ago. That is where we found this Big Italian Red from the heel of the boot. Primitivo grapes (cousin to our beloved Zinfandel), grown in the bright sunshine of Puglia, are made into a full bodied, jammy wine with layers of flavor and spice, perfect for ribs, BBQ chicken, and burgers.

The story begins in 1992 with the opening of a humble wine store in the Cow Hollow/Marina neighborhood of San Francisco called PlumpJack Wine & Spirits. Founded by Gavin Newsom, this store provided an inviting space for people to explore and discover the world of wines in a friendly, approachable atmosphere.
The inspiration behind the name came from one of Shakespeare’s most unforgettable characters, Sir John “PlumpJack” Falstaff.
