Jon Rimmerman started Garagiste on a shoestring with a lifelong dream and a simple concept: to bring the winemaker and consumer closer together by taking advantage of a then-new technology (email) and merging it with the ethos of a co-op. Garagiste has developed into a literary montage of philosophy, culture, travel, history, and the world as seen through Jon’s eyes.

In a disturbing trend in the trade (at the classified growth level), top estates are providing “thimble” samples for analysis (the small bottles) instead of “wasting” a full bottle (or 375ml) on a critic, importer or merchant. With so many demands for samples, they claim there is not enough wine to provide larger vessels for analysis (even though they did so for decades prior?). It strikes me that a fair view of one’s wine requires 1-2 days of open exposure to properly evaluate what’s in the bottle. A small single pour such as this actually does this particular traditional estate a disservice - it’s a wine that generally requires MORE oxygen exposure to show itself, not less - an evaluation that requires multiple pours over many hours to fully understand. Oh well.
