LJ team visited the distillery in April of this year. Being there in person at Peerless allowed us to pick from over 10 samples. We came up with a stellar pick from their some of the oldest barrel stock.

LJ Peerless Single Barrel Rye 3P

54.95% ABV

Price: $109.99

Age 8 years one of the oldest barrels from them.

A Sweet mash fermentation bottled up at barrel proof as the label proudly states no water added. The hot honey and vanilla bean nose do a poor job up of covering up those classic rye spicy notes that dance about. The palate is bold and screams Kentucky rye with a whole spice rack complementing intense dry oak. Truly a full throttle dram with layers upon layers of glove, nutmeg, graham crackers , and bold oak. This is the type of whiskey that hits you in the face right at first yet comes at you with new nuances with each sip.

56.6 % ABV

A deep bronze color has developed nicely after almost 7 ½ years aging and double oak maturation. The nose appears to be developing quickly with initial notes of black tea changing into raw honey then creme brulee. On the palate a soft and round mouth feel are deceptive as deep palate staining flavors of unsweetened tea, white flowers, and charred marshmallows linger on. A complex whiskey that seems to offer new layers with each sip. The oak is big and bright but not overpowering .

This week is going to be busy one for barrel releases. We can’t get enough of Makers Mark private select.

LJ Makers Mark Private Select Bourbon 2P

55.45% ABV

Price: $79.99

We had a lot of fun putting this one together with the 10 finishing staves. Our last barrel was all about power and a chewy texture. This barrel is equal quality but goes in a totally different direction. The nose is delicate yet persistent offering up notes of candied ginger, orange zest, and marzipan candy, In the mouth citrus oils, cherry juice are perfectly balanced by toasted oak . This whiskey is all about balance and harmony plenty of complex layers with nothing overpower or dominating. It would make a beautiful old fashioned or Manhattans but why bother when it tasted so good straight up.
