How the Grand Canyon got cut, how to get to the South Rim, and the eleven tribes who call it home, all in this caption.

A little at a time still counts.

Eleven contemporary tribes have cultural links to Grand Canyon and call it home (National Park Service).

Grand Canyon, Tusayan and Williams folks: which overlook do you send visitors to first? Tell us below.

The Colorado River began carving the canyon 5 to 6 million years ago (National Park Service).

The South Rim is open all year (NPS). The South Entrance is 6 miles north of Tusayan, about 60 minutes from Interstate 40 and Williams and about 90 minutes from Flagstaff. The East Entrance at Desert View is 25 miles west of Cameron.

I make videos of Arizona places. I've been walking these lands for thousands of years, listening and watching. Now I share the stories I learned. Today you see me sitting in a chair outside the Snow Cap in Seligman, Arizona.

Seligman sits in the homeland of the Havasupai people. They call it Thavgyalyal (Hinton, 1984).

If you've been to one of these places, which one? Tell me below. 👇

WHAT I'VE SEEN HERE
• Folks in this town talked Arizona into namin' the old road a Historic Highway in 1987. Seligman's been called the birthplace of Historic Route 66 ever since (NPS).
• The interstate went around this town in 1978. I watched the traffic stop (NPS).
• Juan Delgadillo built the Snow Cap in 1953, mostly out of scrap lumber from the Santa Fe rail yard (Arizona historical marker, 2003).

WHEN TO GO
Any day the Snow Cap's open. Blue hour is when the awning lights come on.

HOW TO GET THERE
I-40 to exit 123 or 121, then Historic Route 66 into town.

RESPECT
Sit in the chairs. Leave the car alone.

Flagstaff, best views, best meals. Tell me why.
Folks who live here, what's your favorite dining stop?
Name the place and why, in one line. The best answer, Albert carries to the next video.

How a river ended up a thousand feet down, what lifted the ground under it, and whose land the overlook stands on. All in this caption.

The ground rose under the Colorado River, and the river kept its course at Horseshoe Bend, Arizona.

Page, Arizona: sunrise or sunset at the Bend? Tell us below.

LITTLE-KNOWN
• Around 5 million years ago the Colorado Plateau uplifted, and the meandering rivers crossing it were trapped in their beds (National Park Service).
• Over time the river cut down through the uplifted layers of sandstone (National Park Service).
• The bend is roughly 1,000 feet deep and curves 270 degrees (National Park Service).

WHEN TO GO
Hike at the coolest time of day. There is no water on the trail and very little shade (National Park Service).

HOW TO GET THERE
The trailhead is off US 89 between mileposts 544 and 545, about 5 miles south of the Carl Hayden Visitor Center. The City of Page runs the parking lot and charges a fee; park passes do not apply. The walk to the overlook is 1.5 miles round trip (National Park Service).

WHOSE LAND
The trail and the overlook are on the Navajo Nation (National Park Service).

RESPECT
Much of the rim has no railing above a 1,000-foot drop. Stay back from the edge, and no drones without written park approval (National Park Service).

The Route 66 bridge that changed jobs, and the year it happened. All in this caption.

At Topock, Arizona, the old Route 66 bridge over the Colorado River now carries natural gas instead of cars.

River folks from Topock to Needles: have you spotted the white arch from the water? Tell us below.

LITTLE-KNOWN
• The Old Trails Bridge carried the National Old Trails Road first, and Route 66 by 1926 (National Park Service).
• In 1948 the deck was removed so the bridge could carry a natural gas pipeline, which it still carries (National Park Service).
• It sits a few hundred feet south of where Interstate 40 crosses the Colorado River (National Park Service).

RESPECT
This area holds cultural importance for nine federally recognized tribes (U.S. Department of the Interior). Look from the shore, leave no trace.

Where 20,000 cranes sleep, where they spend the day, and the hour they lift off. All in this caption.

Every winter night the cranes come back to the same water at Whitewater Draw, Arizona.

Sulphur Springs Valley folks: do the cranes feed in the fields near you? Tell us below.

LITTLE-KNOWN
• About 20,000 sandhill cranes use the lake at Whitewater Draw as their nighttime roost, October through March (Arizona Game and Fish).
• At sunrise they fly out to farm fields across the Sulphur Springs Valley to feed, and they are back on the water before noon (Arizona Game and Fish).

WHEN TO GO
October through March. Be there before sunrise to watch them lift off (Arizona Game and Fish).

A railroad siding, a dam that never came, and a neon sign that's still standing. All in this caption.

Truxton, Arizona is a Route 66 town that grew up on a bet.

Truxton and Peach Springs folks: have you stopped for a photo at the Frontier Motel sign? Tell us below.

LITTLE-KNOWN
• According to local history, two men built a service station here in 1951, expecting a dam on the Colorado River at Bridge Canyon. The dam was never built, and Route 66 traffic kept the business going (Legends of America).
