Anyone else wake up this morning feeling like the Halloween train hit them? Miraculously, I didn’t eat a single piece of candy. I did, however, bounce between Oktoberfest b**rs and smoked Old Fashioneds all night, a decision I’m now reviewing from a 6am flight.

In my defense, the pairing isn’t crazy. The problem was never the lineup, it was the volume. Small mercy: the clocks fell back last night, so my body thinks it slept in.

Lesson learned, again.

Alright y’all, it’s time to get serious. (Said in my best Joker voice.)

Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, which means there is no “I have work in the morning” excuse. There is no early exit. There is only the plan, and if you do not have one by now, I say this with love: you are the guy who shows up as “a guy in a hoodie” and tells everyone it is a costume.

So let’s fix that. Twelve 33 Distillery’s Drunkin Punkin is a rum cream with real pumpkin flavor, and it is the rare seasonal bottle that actually earns its spot in your game-plan.

Think pumpkin pie filling that went to college and came back interesting. Smooth, spiced, a little vanilla, and at 34 proof it plays nice all night instead of ending your night by 9:30.

The easy move is over ice with a pinch of cinnamon.

The move that gets you invited back to the Halloween party next year is a Drunkin Punkin Espresso Martini: two ounces Drunkin Punkin, one ounce vodka, one ounce cold brew, shaken hard and strained into a glass with a cinnamon sugar rim. Make a batch before the trick or treaters show up and thank me Sunday.

W**e Wednesday is coming at you hard this week, and it brought five bottles of crisp, salty, seafood loving white w**e. Halloween candy can wait.

Let’s start in Chablis, where the vineyards sit on ancient limestone packed with fossilized oyster shells. Yes, the dirt is literally made of seafood. That’s why these w**es taste like the ocean in the best possible way.

J. Moreau et Fils Gloire de Chablis 2023 is your classic, no nonsense intro. Bright lemon, green apple, and that chalky snap that makes you want a dozen oysters immediately. Family run since 1814, so they’ve had some practice.

Bernard Defaix Chablis Premier Cru Vaillons 2023 is the overachiever of the group. Vaillons is one of the most respected Premier Cru sites, and it shows: more depth, a little richness, and a long mineral finish. Pour it with scallops and accept the compliments.

Les Hauts de Milly Chablis 2025 comes from the next generation of the Defaix family in the village of Milly. Young, zippy, and fresh. Basically what I wanted to be at 25 and wasn’t.

Then we hop over to Rías Baixas in northwest Spain, where Albariño grows practically on the Atlantic coast. Viña Cartín 2025 comes from Val do Salnés, the coolest and wettest part of the region, so expect sea spray, citrus peel, and a salty kick that pairs perfectly with shrimp and grits. Abellio Albariño is the softer, friendlier one, with peach, lime, and a juicy finish. It’s the bottle you open while the shrimp are still on the grill.

Monday love goes out to our friends up the road at High Wire Distilling. Their Jimmy Red bourbon comes from an heirloom Lowcountry corn that was once down to two cobs. Two. Now it makes one of the richest, nuttiest bourbons around, and we have the whole lineup on the shelf.

Our Monday fix is the Benton’s Smoked in an Old Fashioned with maple syrup instead of sugar. It tastes like a campfire that went to finishing school.

Took the boat out for one more sunset before October gives up on us entirely, and brought a bottle that understood the assignment. The Luli 2024 Chardonnay from the Santa Lucia Highlands is for anyone who still thinks Chardonnay means butter bomb. Zero malolactic fermentation and only neutral barrels, so instead of movie theater popcorn you get crisp green apple, lemon zest, and a little stony minerality from fog-soaked granite hillsides. It tastes exactly like the sky looked.

Insider tip: pull it from the cooler ten minutes before pouring. Ice cold mutes all the good stuff, and good stuff is the whole point.

Grab a bottle at East Bay before the sunsets get any earlier. We can’t do anything about the time change, but we can help.
