The Mountain that Looks Covered in Snow but Isn't

From a distance, Pamukkale, Turkey, looks as though snow has spilled down a mountainside. Except it can be warm outside. And that's not snow.

Mineral-rich thermal water has flowed down the hillside for thousands of years, leaving brilliant white deposits. Over time, the water created terraces, pools, and formations cascading down the slope.

Its Turkish name even means "Cotton Castle."

Above this strange natural landscape are the ruins of Hierapolis, an ancient city whose residents also valued the area's thermal waters.

Geology, ancient history, and hot springs all piled into one very strange-looking mountain.

The Road Built by a Giant - or so the Legend Says

On the coast of Northern Ireland, tens of thousands of stone columns fit together so neatly that they look manufactured. Many are hexagonal. They form natural steps leading from the cliffs toward the sea.

Science tells us the Giant's Causeway formed through ancient volcanic activity as lava cooled and fractured. Irish legend gives us a much more entertaining explanation. The stones became associated with the giant Finn McCool, who supposedly built a causeway across the sea toward Scotland.

Stand there looking at those astonishingly regular stones, and you understand why people once thought, "Nature couldn't possibly have done this." A giant must have been involved. Or maybe a great big amazing God.

The Giant EYE You can See from Space.

In the Sahara Desert, an enormous formation shaped like a bull's eye stands out. It's called the Richat Structure, Better known as the Eye of the Sahara.

It's roughly 25 miles across. Its circular appearance once led people to consider whether it might be an enormous impact crater. Instead, geology and erosion created the extraordinary concentric rings we see today.

And here's the really strange part: It's much easier to appreciate from high above. Astronauts have photographed the giant eye from orbit. Imagine a natural feature so large that you sometimes need to leave Earth to see it.
