Join us for a “Taste of Latitudes” this week!

Our “Latitudes” Wine Club is geared toward wine drinkers who enjoy exploration through the vast world of wine. Each month club members receive 4 wines that I’ve chosen based on new discoveries, seasonality, and that I feel have potential for broad appeal even if they are relatively unknown. This week, our tasting will feature the 4 wines that our club members will receive as part of their August membership, thus a preview for members and non-members alike.

August takes us on the ultimate European summer holiday.

We’ll enjoy 2 white wines, starting with an ultimate summer wine, light, crisp, slightly fizzy Vinho Verde from Portugal. With under 10% ABV, this refreshing wine is easy to enjoy on its own or as a companion to lighter faire. We’ll then head to the Italian region of Marche, where the Verdicchio grape variety takes center stage. This region is influenced by both the Adriatic Sea and Apennine Mountains, and the Verdicchio we’re tasting embodies this with a perfect combination of saltiness and minerality.

We’re pouring 2 red wines, as we travel to France and Croatia. Cru level Beaujolais wines offer a step above the broader appelated wines, and a significant leap from the youthful Nouveau bottlings. We’re introducing a new selection from the Juienas Cru, which showcases a deeper expression of the Gamay varietal. We’ll conclude our journey where anyone would be delighted to holiday, on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. We’ll taste a wine made from the Croatian Plavak Mali variety, made by an iconic French winemaker the winery has consulted with.

As the Tour proceeds into its final week, it will include back to back mountain stages this Thursday and Friday in the Savoie region. Just west of the Switzerland border, this alpine region’s geography and character are a French-Swiss combo. We’ll be showcasing the full range of sparkling, white, rosé and red wines coming from this one-of-a-kind region.

Jean Vullien and his two sons, David and Olivier, are producing some fantastic wines from this pristine, picturesque region. Our flight will begin with their Cremant de Savoie, made with a blend of local varieties Jacquere and Altesse, along with Chardonnay. Made in the traditional method, this vintage bubbly has a bright lemony character with a creamy mousse. We’ll conclude the flight with a red wine from the Vullien’s, made with the local Mondeuse variety. This is an enchanting red with iwth violet and cherry notes, as well as decidedly peppery notes.

The local Altesse variety produces distinct white wines with citrus and slightly herbal aromas, with the ability to age quite well. We’re tasting a 100% Altesse wine, also known locally as Roussette de Savoie, from a historical vineyard site that was acquired by a winemaker Erwan Buchwalter in 2022. This site was the very first home of the Altesse grape in the region, and has employed organic farming since 2013, and Erwan has since employed biodynamic practices.

To my surprise I discovered a Rosé de Savoie that is not only good, it far over-delivered on my expectations and is super delicious wine. a 50/50 blend of Gamay and Pinot Noir, this is a mouth-watering rosé that offers delicate aromas of strawberry and raspberry. It is perfectly light, crisp, and quite dry on the palate.

Make your plans to join us this week as the tour concludes!

Willamette Valley producer visits, day 1:

Starting the day tasting with Kelley Fox makes for an above average Monday. I’ve carried Kelley’s wines at 34th° since the day we opened, and today reinforced why I’ll continue to for years to come.

We tasted Kelley’s single vineyard Pinot Noir series, Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay - including a barrel sample of her soon to be bottled 2024 Chardonnay. A few treasures are coming home for my personal collection, and we’ll see new offerings on our shelves for you to enjoy soon.

The intention in Kelley’s wines is unmistakable, and her ability to steward the wine from grapes to glass while holding true to the variety and place is truly remarkable.

Today was a good day. Sincere thanks, Kelley!

This week the Tour de France heads south and will include mountain stages in the Pyrenees. We’re along for the ride and will jump slightly ahead to where the tour will ride early next week in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. This wine regions begins on the eastern edge of the Pyrenees Mountains, stretching inland and along the Mediterranean coast, with the Rhône Valley to the north and Provence to the east.

Our flight this week will begin with the oldest type sparkling wine produced in the world, Blanquette de Limoux. This traditional method sparkling wine has captivating flavors of citrus, apple and Mirabelle plum, it’s a must try for any bubbly fans, especially if you’ve never had the “OG” sparkler.

Picpoul de Pinet is an appellation along the Mediterranean coast that produces white wines made 100% from the Picpoul variety. We’re tasting one that is a pure ray of summer sunshine, with crisp and briny mineral notes, along with a melon and citrus flavors that keep you coming back for more.

We can’t venture to the south of France and not include rosé in a tasting. This week we’re pouring a 100% Grenache Gris rosé, from vineyards on an old salt water lagoon situated between two mountain ranges - the Montagne Noire and the foothills of the Pyrenees. This fresh, refined rosé is perfect to accompany any dish at your summer barbecue, even those with a bit of spice.

Finally, we’ll finish with a longtime favorite red blend from the Cotes Catalanes. This blend of Grenache, Carignan, and Syrah has a magical ability to appeal to old world red lovers and Napa Cab enthusiasts alike.

The riders have started on the 3+ week journey through France, and we’re off with them as we begin a 3-part tasting series of various French regions. We’re starting this week in the Loire Valley, where the tour will also ride through this weekend.

We’re kicking off our tasting tour with a sparkling Cremant de Loire produced in the middle Loire appellation of Tourraine. This Cremant is a blend of equal parts Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Franc. Made in the traditional method and spends 20 months on the lees. It’s the perfect aperitif with white peach aromas, fine bubbles, and flavors of citrus and chamomile.

A signature wine of the lower Loire valley is Muscadet Sèvre & Maine sur lie, Made from 100% Melon de Bourgogne. Near the Atlantic Ocean with a maritime climate and rocky soils, this zippy mineral driven wine is vivacious and ready to be paired with oysters and any shellfish of your choosing.

Last week we featured a rather rare white blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay made in the Willamette Valley, which was inspired by the wines of the Cheverny, an appellation in the Central Loire Valley. This week we’ll taste a classic Cheverny Blanc with 85% SB & 15% Chardonnay that is full of elegance and verve.

Finally, we’ll conclude in Chinon, where the Tour will ride through this Sunday, with a Cabernet Franc. This wine is sun-ripe and smooth as silk, an especially palatable expression of Chinon. In French the name of the wine we’re enjoying means “thirst for tenderness,” it’s profile lives up to this expression.
