As the Tour proceeds into its final week, it will include back to back mountain stages this Thursday and Friday in the Savoie region. Just west of the Switzerland border, this alpine region’s geography and character are a French-Swiss combo. We’ll be showcasing the full range of sparkling, white, rosé and red wines coming from this one-of-a-kind region.
Jean Vullien and his two sons, David and Olivier, are producing some fantastic wines from this pristine, picturesque region. Our flight will begin with their Cremant de Savoie, made with a blend of local varieties Jacquere and Altesse, along with Chardonnay. Made in the traditional method, this vintage bubbly has a bright lemony character with a creamy mousse. We’ll conclude the flight with a red wine from the Vullien’s, made with the local Mondeuse variety. This is an enchanting red with iwth violet and cherry notes, as well as decidedly peppery notes.
The local Altesse variety produces distinct white wines with citrus and slightly herbal aromas, with the ability to age quite well. We’re tasting a 100% Altesse wine, also known locally as Roussette de Savoie, from a historical vineyard site that was acquired by a winemaker Erwan Buchwalter in 2022. This site was the very first home of the Altesse grape in the region, and has employed organic farming since 2013, and Erwan has since employed biodynamic practices.
To my surprise I discovered a Rosé de Savoie that is not only good, it far over-delivered on my expectations and is super delicious wine. a 50/50 blend of Gamay and Pinot Noir, this is a mouth-watering rosé that offers delicate aromas of strawberry and raspberry. It is perfectly light, crisp, and quite dry on the palate.
