About Brooks:
Founded in 1998, Brooks is a female-led, family-owned winery located in Amity, Oregon, in the heart of the Willamette Valley. The winery produces 18,000 cases annually across 50 labels, with a focus on Pinot Noir, Riesling, and other aromatic white wines.

Over the years, Brooks has earned widespread acclaim. In 2019, 2021, and 2023, Brooks was designated as one of the Top 100 Wineries in the world by Wine & Spirits Magazine and has been named a 100 Best Fan-Favorite Destination in Oregon six years in a row. In 2023, Brooks was named Green Company of the Year by The Drinks Business and was #28 of the World’s Best Vineyards in 2023 and #55 in 2024.

Brooks is the living legacy of Jimi Brooks, a visionary Portland native who came to wine through his passion for history and philosophy. Jimi devoted his life to holistic farming and winemaking in the Willamette Valley. Jimi passed away unexpectedly in 2004 at the age of 38. His son Pascal (8 years old at the time) became the Owner of Brooks, and Brooks has continued with the dedication of Jimi’s best friend, Chris Williams (Brooks’ Winemaker Emeritus), and his sister, Janie Heuck (Brooks’ Managing Director). Today, Claire Jarreau serves as Winemaker, and the entire team remains committed to carrying forward Jimi’s vision of quality, sustainability, and community.

Our month-long tour of Italy concludes this week with a trip to the regions of Campania, Calabria, and Sicily, exploring unique native grape varieties.

We’ll start in Campania with one of the signature white wines of this regions, Falanghina. This fresh and inviting wine comes from a winery that is located inside of the National Cilento Park, in which they have 149 hectares planted to organic vineyards and olive groves.

Just south of Campania we find the region of Calabria, the peninsula region that makes up most of the “foot of the boot.” Calabria is one of the smallest wine producing regions in Italy, and thus it’s not frequent to come upon Calabrian wines in the U.S. The wine we’ll taste is in fact the first Calabrian wine I’ve brought into the shop, and it’s made primarily with the top local red variety Gaglioppo.

Our tour will conclude on the Sicilian island, which sits just 2 miles apart from the west coast of Calabria at its most narrow point, separated by the Straight of Messina. Sicily is home to a culture of its own, and many unique wine styles. We’ll enjoy a white wine made from the Grillo and Catarratto grape varieties, with beautiful fresh citrus, sea spray and mineral qualities. From the western side of the island we’ll enjoy a red wine made from the Perricone variety, a local grape characterized by rich red fruit with notes of licorice.

Make your plans to join us for the final installment of this Tour of Italy:

As we continue this month’s Tour of Italy, this week we are visiting the Emilia Romagna and Piedmont regions.

Given the culinary focus of Emilia Romagna, it should come to no surprise that the most notable wine of the region is one especially well-suited for its food accompaniment, Lambrusco! We will start the flight this week with a light and lively rosé Spumante from the Lambrusco Grasparossa variety, with a small amount of Pinot Nero (Noir) in the blend. Not quite your Lambrusco from the 80’s, you’ll want to taste this refined expression.

From the Piedmont region we’ll taste two wines from a producer I’ve recently introduced in the shop, Malabaila. The white Roero Arneis was a selection in the March “Latitudes” Wine Club. We’ll taste the Arneis this week, along with their Langhe Nebbiolo, which showcases a delightful side of this varietal built for youthful consumption. Our final wine is a Barbera d’Alba from an esteemed Piedmont producer of many classic wines. This wine has been a regular in my personal consumption rotation, and is making its tasting debut.

Please join us as the Tour of Italy continues:

Are you Right Bank, or Left Bank? Otherwise stated (simplistically) do you prefer Cabernet Sauvignon driven, or Merlot-dominated blends?

This tasting will provide an ideal landscape for guests to determine if they gravitate to one profile or the other. We’ll taste two Right Bank and two Left Bank wines, each falling into classic profile blends of the respective areas, and each from the exceptional, elegant, fruit forward 2019 vintage.

From the Left Bank we’ll taste wines from the prestigious appellations of Margaux and St. Julien. The gravel and sand driven soils of the Left Bank produce more structured, opulent wines vs the Right Bank. From the Right Bank we’ll taste a wine from the Fronsac appellation, and one produced with grapes from the St. Emilion and Cotes de Castillon appellations. Clay and limestone soils from these Right Bank areas produce wines with silkier tannins and plummy fruit characteristics.

Makes your plans to join us for this Tour de Bordeaux:
• Chateau Malescot, La Dame de Malescot, Margaux 2019
• Chateau du Glana Saint Julien 2019
• Esprit de Pavie Bordeaux Rouge 2019
• Vignoble Paul Barre Chateau La Grave Fronsac 2019
