Gastronomia Salumeria Canlamessa in Turin, 1951. In front, nine “damigiane,” large glass demijohns wrapped in wicker baskets for protection. The damigiane were used for selling wine sfuso (loose wine). Customers bring their own smaller bottles or jugs, and the shopkeeper would ladle or siphon the wine out.
