The Wine Spectator gave Dominus 2018 the distinction of Wine of the Year for 2021.

“The 2018 season saw warm but very steady temperatures, without heat spikes,” says winemaker Tod Mostero. “The ripening was even, there was no sunburn and no dehydration. There was no stress, no rush to do anything, no emergency work.”

The evenness of the season shows in the 2018 Dominus, which captures the essence of the vintage perfectly, with vivid and dense yet restrained fruit carried by evident yet fine-grained and well-integrated structure. The wine brims with a deep, warm loamy edge and is backed by cast iron accents on the finish—a compelling display of great terroir.

Christian Moueix aims to ensure the vitality of his vineyards for future generations to come, promising wines of uncompromising quality.

The estate is well-known as one of the few dry-farmed vineyards in Napa Valley, where most vineyards instead rely heavily on irrigation. Through solely relying on natural rainfall and soil moisture, the vines develop deeper root systems, which enhances their resilience to drought conditions. This practice not only conserves water but also produces more concentrated and flavourful grapes.

The name "Dominus," meaning "Lord of the Estate" in Latin, reflects his commitment to stewardship of the land and producing wines that express the unique terroir of Napa Valley, in Yountville. Dominus has emerged as one of the very top Napa Valley reds, scoring four 100-point scores from Wine Advocate since 1983. Dominus Estate is the third vineyard in Napa Valley to achieve the new, more rigorous qualifications for Napa Green Certified Vineyard status. This certification is groundbreaking as it is the first in the wine industry to focus specifically on climate action, regenerative farming, and social equity.

The origin of Marqués de Murrieta winery is also the origin of Rioja. Don Luciano Murrieta, applying techniques learned in Bordeaux, made the first Rioja wine in 1852, with the intention of sustaining it over time.

Don Luciano´s vision was clear from the beginning: to create a fine Rioja wine with a great ageing potential and start exporting it outside of Spain. He shipped his first vintage, with the legendary 1852, to countries such as Mexico and Cuba, making it the first fine Rioja wine to be exported.
