Hk Whisky Festival 2025 recap

Fantastic start for Portugal's *first ever* single malt (and single cask from cask number 1!) whisky. thank you to Jay Venakki for sensing these over to HK literally in time for HKWF, (good friend of John's by the way)

Yes it makes perfect sense, great wines from portugal means great casks for aging and maturing whisky. This particular bottle was matured in some bourbon casks and partially matured in a high quality port cask.

scoring 96 points in Jim Murrays whisky bible

It is a hot dram, the flavours are rich and bold, sometimes I wonder and worry about hot climates over oaking casks, this dram definitely does it well.

with the high ABV, adding some drops of water bring out even more sweetness and citrus and creamy oak notes. lovely fruity berry notes from the port cask.

🚨 Beware of Whisky Cask Investment Scams! 🚨

The recent collapse of Whisky Merchants Trading Ltd—linked to prominent whisky cask investment entities Cask 88 and Braeburn Whisky—highlights the dangers of speculative whisky cask investments.

A key lesson: "Certificates of ownership" provided by these firms are NOT proof of actual legal cask ownership. Genuine ownership requires direct contact with a bonded warehouse and a properly issued Delivery Order, countersigned by the warehouse keeper. D.O.'s do not get produced immediately!

Whisky cask scams typically involve:

❌ Selling non-existent casks
❌ Inflated pricing
❌ Selling the same cask to multiple buyers
❌ Pyramid-like schemes using new investors to exit older ones

Protect yourself:

✅ Verify ownership directly with reputable warehouses.
✅ Conduct thorough due diligence—research the companies and directors thoroughly.
✅ Avoid investments promising guaranteed returns or aggressive marketing tactics.
✅ Consider investing directly in established whisky businesses, reputable bottlers, or collectible bottles rather than speculative whisky casks.
✅ Most importantly, invest in whisky because you enjoy it—buy bottles or casks for personal enjoyment, celebration, or gifting.
