Do you know the difference between an 'Imperial' and a 'Methuselah'?
This is not a trick question! They are the same in that Imperials and Methuselahs both contain 600cl, or eight standard bottles, of wine. And both make a serious 'statement' at any social occasion!
But they are also different, because 'Imperials' are used mainly for fine wine, whereas 'Methuselahs' are for Champagne. Imperial bottles are more upright, whereas Methuselahs have a sloping neck to withstand the pressure of the carbonation in Champagne. Methuselah was actually the oldest person in the Hebrew Bible, living to ripe old age of 969. This is fitting, because wine ages much more slowly in very large formats - as much less of the wine is in contact with the cork. So these giant formats are exceptionally good for long-term aging (plus they cost way less to store!)
