What we're drinking this week: Admiral Rodney HMS Royal Oak Rum. 🥃

Ahead of welcoming our clients to our sold out rum tasting later on this week, we thought we'd get in the mood for the occasion with the fantastic Admiral Rodney HMS Royal Oak Rum.

This is an intense rum, which features flavours of saltines, chocolate, vanilla and even to***co, all of which is aged in oak. It also has a lingering sweet finish, which consists of tastes of caramel, fruits and spices.

Produced by St. Lucia Distillers, this is actually the last remaining distillery on the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia. The distillery uses a Coffey column still for distillation, whilst sourcing molasses from local sugar cane and pure spring water, which contribute to the rum’s distinctive character.

These are two great choices within the sparkling wine market, from an award-winning, family-run estate. The Blanc de Blancs has hints of citrus and in particular lime, with great finesse on the finish. Pair with oysters and seafood for an indulgent experience.

What we're drinking this week: Chairman's Reserve Original Spiced Rum. 🥃

Chairman's Reserve Rums are produced by Saint Lucia Distillers, the sole remaining distillery on the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia. Established in 1972, the distillery’s commitment to blending expertise and innovative aging techniques has solidified its reputation for producing high-quality rums.

The Original Spiced Rum enjoys expressive aromas of bitter orange, cinnamon, nutmegs and the sweetness of raisins. Coupled with sweet and rich notes of exotic spices, marmalade, apricot jam and crisp citrus hints, this is a wonderfully evocative spiced rum.

The balance of warm spices and citrus zest make it incredibly versatile for sipping neat, enjoying over ice, or as a flavourful base in various cocktails. 🍹

This International Women's Day, we'd like to throw a spotlight on a wonderful woman working within the wine industry: Katia Alvarez, Director of Oenology at Bodegas Martín Códax. 🍷

Katia has been the Director of Oenology at Bodegas Martín Códax since 2005, and crafts exceptional Albariño wines, which embody the vibrant spirit of Galicia. Her meticulous attention to detail and innovative techniques brings out the unique terroir of Rías Baixas.

Under her leadership, Bodegas Martín Códax has explored innovative techniques, which have changed the perceptions of Albariño wines. Her commitment to authenticity and respect for varietals has been a hallmark of her winemaking philosophy, and in 2017, The Drinks Business recognised Katia as one of Spain's top ten women winemakers.

Our favourite wine from this range? Martín Códax Albariño. A wine which is both peachy and citrusy, it evokes the seaside in one bottle, and - no surprise - pairs well with seafood.

It's Pancake Day! 🥞 And that can only mean one thing: dessert wine is your friend tonight 😋 Here's our pick for a perfect pancake pairing: Moscato D’Asti DOCG - Vignaioli Di S. Stefano.

This Moscato d’Asti is a lightly sparkling, sweet Italian white wine which on the nose has brilliant aromas of honeysuckle, orange blossom, and ripe peaches. Tasting notes include delicious flavours of apricots, white grapes and citrus zest, which is all balanced nicely by a refreshing acidity and delicate effervescence. It's certainly very easy to drink! 🥂

When it comes to pairing with pancakes, Moscato d’Asti is a wonderful choice, especially when they are topped with fruit, syrup, or cream. The wine’s natural sweetness complements the pancakes’ soft texture, while its acidity cuts through the richness of butter or cream. If you’re having berry-topped pancakes or those with a drizzle of honey or maple syrup, the fruit-forward profile of the Moscato enhances those flavours beautifully.

However, be warned that if the pancakes are heavily chocolate-based, the pairing may be a bit too sweet unless balanced with fresh berries or a tangy sauce! Well, at least those berries will count towards your five a day, right? 🍇

What a wonderful time we had on Friday at our Beat the Wine Bluffers event in aid of SNAP Charity! 🍷

This unusual tasting session saw teams battle it out to name the wine in question whilst raising money for this wonderful charity.

Who's joining our Wine Bluffers tonight?! Supporting the community around us is a big part of the Shenfield Wine Co. ethos, and as such, we're delighted to be hosting tonight's Beat the Wine Bluffers event in aid of SNAP Charity.

As many of our local followers will know, SNAP are a wonderful charity who support children and young adults with any additional needs in and around Essex. Looking forward to Wednesday's SOLD OUT Vasse Felix tasting? 🍷 We had the special opportunity to attend a masterclass hosted by Paul Holmes, CEO and owner of Vasse Felix, one of Australia’s most historic and respected wineries, ahead of our event at The Tasting Room this week.

The session was incredibly insightful, offering a deep understanding of the winemaking craft and the pioneering spirit that established Vasse Felix as Margaret River’s first winery in 1967. Paul’s knowledge and passion brought the rich history of Vasse Felix to life, highlighting its role in shaping Australian wine.

Experiencing this firsthand made the masterclass even more inspiring, reinforcing the significance of Vasse Felix’s legacy and its commitment to excellence, and we can't wait to share this with our clients later on this week.

Winery spotlight: Danbury Ridge Wine Estate. 🍷 This week we're shining a light on one of our favourite British wineries, and one which is based right here in Essex. In honour of Global Drink Wine Day earlier on this week, meet Danbury Ridge!

Danbury Ridge was founded by Michael and Heather Bunker, alongside their daughters Janine and Sophie. After years living abroad, the Bunker family returned to their Essex roots, settling in the village of Danbury. Inspired by the land’s potential, they embarked on a journey to cultivate vineyards.

The family concentrated on the classic Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grape varieties, and it's the Pinot Noir that we're focussing on today. This is a rich Pinot Noir with red fruit aromas and just a hint of smoky spiciness.
