We went to Cognac! Part 2. With Maison Ferrand UK

In Cognac winemaking must finish by the end of March. The grapes are crushed and fermented for 5 days resulting in an acidic wine of 9/10 % ABV Distillation is completed in 3 weeks at Ferrand.
The liquid is then aged in both dry and wet cellars. Water evaporates in the dry cellar adding texture and delicacy. Whilst alcohol evaporates in the wet cellar giving a rounded mouthfeel. Barrels will switch between the two until the desired flavour and texture are reached.

We were shown round aging cellars and dusty rooms with experiments and aging sugars. The oldest cognac I tasted was from 1952!

Some fun facts:
It takes 9 litres of wine to make 1 litre of spirit.
Grand Champagne was named by the Romans because it reminded them of Campania BEFORE the other Champagne.
There are no handpicked grapes in Cognac.

We went to Cognac! Or Laura (me) did at least.
Maison Ferrand UK took me out for a few days and boy was it wonderful and delicious.

Here are a few pics from Madamoiselle’s House where Ferrand family history meets cognac tasting.

Built in 1840, 10 generations of the Ferrand family went on to live here in the heart of Cognac. The house is now a trust with amazing archives and history being preserved for visitors.

Some new in bottles!

1. Vinteloper Rose
The team are pretty much huge fans of everything Vinteloper produce, from their Touriga National or their Riesling and now we have the rose to add to that list!
90% Shiraz 10% Pinot Noir 100% Vinteloper estate grown. Think savoury salt air and a peach on beach.

2. Theopetra Estate Terre Grec Assyrtiko
The White blend (Muscat/Sauvignon) you might have seen on the shelves and has been a solid staple this year and now we have the 100% Assyrtiko. It’s tough to pick a favourite.
Passionfruit, lime and orange leaf with a stunningly long mineral finish.

3. Thibault Ducrox Beaujolais En Roue Libre 2023
A fun, crunchy and lively little number with heaps of red cherries, strawberry and a hint of white peppercorn. 100% Gamay and a nice low intervention.
It’s mouth watering and a great glugger for the nice weather.

4. Companies de Vinhos Natural Mystic Vinho Verde
The Vinho verde hype isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and nor should it.
Think pink grapefruit, lemon peel and gooseberry, vibrant and fresh. One to add to try list!

🍋 Mama Mia Limoncello 🍋

If you saw us at the wine week festival or attended the last bread cheese and wine social you’ll be familiar with this delight. We’ve not stopped going on about it.

Made with only natural ingredients, PGI Femminello del Gargano lemons, no colours and preservatives, vegan, and uses less sugar than most other limoncellos.

Whilst our window is in, we’re doing an incredible deal of £4 off each large bottle and a free Mama Mia glass to enjoy your homemade spritz in.

Plus we will be doing a spritzy tasting with them this Friday at our Sharrow Vale store!

Things I’d be taking to a picnic/beach/bbq this weekend 🌞
Some shop favs and new arrivals on the shelves this week.

🔅 Animalia Organic Orange Wine : Made from Sauvignon Blanc from Chile. A very accessible orange, quince and orange peel, dried apricots and a bit of bite!

🔅 I Capitani Clarum Falanghina : A taste of Campania, Italy. An organic wine with lively fresh fruit (banana & melon) aromatic herbs. Dry, soft and rich!

🔅 Seven Summers Rose : A new 7% rose on the shelf from wine maker Ray O’Conner & Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill 👏🏽👏🏽 “The taste of Provence, rebalanced for modern life.” Redcurrants and pink grapefruit.

🔅 Saladini Pilastri Marche Rose Consenso Rosato : A vibrant and organically grown Sangiovese & montepulciano blend from Marche. Wild strawberries, crushed herbs and watermelon on the nose, clean and lively with a stoney finish.
