It is incredibly sad and such a shock to hear of the passing of Matthew Jukes.
From 2013 onwards, we were privileged to host Matthew’s 100 Best Australian Wines Roadshow on nine occasions. They were always some of the most eagerly anticipated tastings in our calendar, hugely popular with both our customers and our team.
Matthew had a remarkable gift. Before the doors opened, he would happily chat with every member of staff, making everyone feel valued and included. But the moment the room filled with customers, he was completely in his element. He would make a beeline for the busiest part of the room, roll up his sleeves and immerse himself in conversation, effortlessly sharing his incredible knowledge, infectious enthusiasm and endless anecdotes with a captivated audience.
Despite being one of the wine trade’s most respected writers and critics, Matthew was wonderfully approachable. He was generous with his time, genuinely interested in people, and a tireless champion of independent wine merchants.
Whenever we crossed paths at other tastings or events, he would always stop for a chat, usually accompanied by his brilliant sense of humour and unmistakable warmth.
The wine trade has lost one of its true champions far too soon.
All of us at Hennings feel incredibly fortunate to have known Matthew, to have shared memorable evenings with him, and to have witnessed first-hand the passion and joy he brought to our industry.
Our thoughts are with Amelia and all of Matthew’s family, friends and colleagues at this incredibly difficult time.
