I am taking the exceptional step of making this post to make you aware of 2 significant Shop problems: the potential impact of the current economic uncertainty and; the need for more people to step forward as Volunteers and Members of the Shop Committee.

Having got itself onto a more even keel in 2024, the Shop has recently had to take on an additional £2,000 of costs due to a new electricity contract and pay increases. In the early days of April we have also started to see a change in the size and frequency of cost increases due to the economic turmoil in the wider world. We will continue to maximise our fundraising efforts but this alone may not fill the gap. Therefore, we will shortly begin considering other savings measures. There is, however, one way that you can all help – increased use of the Shop in both how often you visit and how much you spend. We hope to weather this storm and I am appealing to you now so that we can retain some control over events.

Although less pressing but equally important, we need more volunteer support for the Shop Committee. We are short 3 members rising to 4 in June. This limits our ability to oversee the shop and fundraise. If you have the time and energy to support our monthly meeting and some additional tasks in any way, then please contact me or any committee member through the Shop.

Shop Volunteers are the lifeblood of the shop and their commitment, energy and flexibility is hugely important to the shop. While we currently have 22 volunteers, this is constantly changing, often leading to a depletion of hours covered. This year our target is to recruit 5 new volunteers who will help fill regular gaps of up to 8 hours a week behind the counter. Again, if you have the time and energy to volunteer for 2 or 3 hours per week, then please contact me or any Committee Member through the shop. Training and mentoring is provided.
