Hungarians say that if you skip goose on St. Martin's Day, you'll go hungry all year. 🪿 So two days later we're making up for it at Hopfenreich in Kreuzberg: Friday 13 November, from 18:30 till late, with this year's new w**e, w**es from small producers all over Hungary and Hungarian snacks, goose included. The craft b**r bar runs as usual next to us, so bring your friends.

On Somló, a lot of w**e still comes from small family cellars, and old local grapes like Juhfark grow on the volcanic slopes. On the same hill, Kreinbacher Birtok Somló makes some of the most exciting sparkling w**e in Hungary, and it has the international medals to prove it. And it still tastes like Somló: salty, mineral, lots of energy. Grab one and bring some sparkle to your weekend.

Juhfark is the most important grape variety in the Somló w**e region – a unique variety grown exclusively there, producing a mineral, slightly smoky, dry white w**e. Today is the Juhfark Festival on Somló, one of Hungary's most unique w**e regions: a small volcanic hill in western Hungary. Juhfark is a white grape variety that only grows here, and the name means "sheep's tail". This bunch we photographed on Somló last September shows why. 🐑 Its w**es are smoky, volcanic, and perfect for chilly days.

Harvest in Hungary is nearly over. 🍇 Many w**eries started picking in early August, weeks earlier than usual.

It was a hard year: a very hot, dry summer, early hailstorms, and a new vine disease impacted the harvest. The berries stayed small and gave less juice. Still, the w**emakers are hopeful. The crop is smaller in places but decent, the grapes came in ripe and healthy, and some 2026 w**es could turn out truly great. We can't wait to taste them. Tonight, open something good in honour of everyone who spent this summer in the vineyards.

//DE Die Lese in Ungarn ist fast vorbei. Hitze, Trockenheit, früher Hagel und eine neue Rebkrankheit haben es den Winzern schwer gemacht. Trotzdem gibt es ordentliche Mengen und die Aussicht auf richtig gute Weine. Wir sind gespannt!

Three of the Hungarian sparkling producers we carry came home with medals from this year's Ch*****ne & Sparkling W**e World Championships: gold for Etyeki Kúria's Blanc de Noirs, Kreinbacher's Égoïste and Sauska's Blanc de Blancs, plus eight silvers between them. 🥂

Hungarian bubbles are having a very good year. Congratulations to all three.

Summer break! Our shop in Berlin is closed this week. We reopen and shipping restarts when we're back behind the counter on Monday (10 August).
