The story begins in Khutsong, Carletonville — Gauteng.
From the quiet classrooms of Grade 1 to the blazing sunlight of Khutsong, Fezile Promise Monageng has carved a path that is as unique as the art he creates. Inspired by a childhood classmate who abandoned the craft, Monageng found his voice in wood burning; a medium that became both therapy and storytelling.Working with nothing more than sunlight and a magnifying glass, Monageng transforms simple wood into lasting narratives. For finer details, he turns to a soldering iron, ensuring each piece carries both precision and soul. His artistry spans hyperrealism, graphite pencil works that rival camera quality and abstract art, designed to captivate viewers with raw emotion and attention-grabbing forms.

“I’m inspired by African culture, sunlight, resilience, and the beauty of turning simple wood into stories that last,” Monageng explains.

His pieces invite audiences to lose themselves in the grain, returning again and again to rediscover meaning.But Monageng’s vision stretches beyond personal creation.

Through his brand, The Shade Arts and Crafts, he dreams of building a studio-store ; a space where handmade South African art thrives, jobs are created, and communities are uplifted.

“I want to show that you can start with nothing but still make something beautiful,” he says.

The challenges ahead are clear: securing a studio, establishing a storefront, and building a team to carry the brand forward. Yet Monageng’s determination burns as brightly as the sunlight he wields.

Gugulethu describes the difference between love and hate as the passion between her grandmother and her mother.

Gugulethu was born into a dysfunctional affair between her parents from Gauteng, and moved to a very rural KZN village when she was five. She recalls not knowing her father and seeing her mother once a year in December.

Through her experiences and her odd personality(being creative) from her family she regards herself as the black sheep also adding to her being her mother's first daughter and the one who resembles her mother the most, which comes as a painful irony because of the brutality she told of her mother towards her.

She is a self-taught, multidisciplinary visual artist whose work tells the deep stories of identity, personal trauma, emotional terrain, memory, healing, body dysphoria, and maternal relationships using distorted figures. To convey her striking, controversial works she uses black pens, coffee, charcoal, and acrylic paint to produce raw, intimate compositions. Her body of work build emotions into visible and built matter that you can hear and connect with on mediums.

She's currently her biggest and most important project, citing that if she can master herself then she can see the visual to her mission and purpose in life and in the universe as whole. As My Kraft we believe she has started conversations within the black community that have always been there but lacked a language. Emotions are often things we feel until they're no longer overwhelming, through Gugu's work they're friends that are having a conversation with us everyday we just need to listen and embrace them back.

Gugulethu's Biggest Triumphs:

"I am so proud of myself for not successfully commiting su***de and that my daughter gets to see me live. After everything I've been through, I could have turn out any other way but look how far I've become."

Women have shown to have this potent strength to sit inside a fire on a warpath and somehow still be able to smile and be grateful for surviving and have the ability to see life from a lens of grace and gratitude and a consistent choice to pursue a life beyond the 3rd degree burns. Masuku suffered parental neglect from both her parents in the form of absence, first-hand rejection from birth to when she got to experience her mother, financial segregation, homelessness, malnutrition and slaying words from her very own mother amounting her to nothingness. She reflected having to learn to take care of herself in the notorious place as Johannesburg from the care of her deeply loving grandmother and a below the bandwidth kind of underprivileged life of a very, very rural KZN area in the homesteads.

"The moment that changed me was holding my infant in my arms and being in agonizing pain from the abuse of her father. I always knew there's more to life and there's more to me. I just didn't know how to touch that and breathe into that. My body gifting me my daughter after all the things it went through changed me forever."
Women are not defined by their resilience and power to return to life only, although commendable and admiring, beyond that it's who they truly are that makes them themselves. Gugu is not only a survivor of the darkness of her life, she's the sealight of the existence of her Self. The world gets to stand on the shoreline of her awe existence as she unravels and roars through like the sea.

Artist of The Week: Gugulethu Masuku 💐

Her name follows her, even though her life story didn't paint that picture. Today we are not delving into her story but we are starting off with her art, for the weekend's segment and nobody could have been a better fit to close off women's month as her.

She's an artist whose work I strongly feel needs not to be studied of which genre it is of and for her to be asked what is it about. Some work need our own imagination, soul processing and interpretation.

You have left me eternally speechless, you are the most strongest girl I've ever come to listen to and I don't know what I would've done if I was born into your world. Thank you for all that you've done for yourself, your lineage and your museum.

This painting tells the story of Frida and her husband of their tumultuous relationship, Diego Rivera who was also an artist.

This body of work was created during a painful time in their marriage when she learnt that her close friend and her husband had an affair and Diego almost divorced her. How this painting is structured shows how Diego consumed Frida's mind and life so much that it was hard for her to have an identify outside of the picture of her and Diego.
