ROCKY PATEL LB1 ROBUSTO

This cigar features an Ecuadorian Connecticut Wrapper
Honduran Binder and Nicaraguan Filler. It is hand rolled in Honduras with the name coming from what they call the blend in the factory. Here is Alastair Magee's review:

The Look:
Beautifully smooth dairy chocolate wrapper with a clean cap and a vintage looking band.

The Cold draw:
Not too much off the wrapper, there is a faint sweetness hiding there. The foot on the other hand is the exact opposite. Fruity chocolate smacks you in the face. Clean draw on my V cut with a subtle sweet cedar wood on the cold draw.

First third:
I don’t know what I was expecting, I haven’t smoked a Rocky Patel in years. When I smelt the foot, I was definitely expecting chocolate and 100% expecting fruit. This is pepper swinging hard from the first bell. Creamy pepper envelopes my mouth. I love black pepper, so it is going down a treat. So far, medium to full.

This is a treat. The pepper has calmed down a little allowing the creaminess to really shine. My mouth is salivating. Paired with my flat white I get tastes of lemon cream biscuits. The draw is perfect and the smoke output is good.

The strength has calmed to a nice medium now. The pepper is still at the front but is accompanied by cedar, cream and citrus.
I can’t say I’ve had a Patel this good before. Make sure you sit back and admire this blend. I’ve sat it down against my will to do just that. The fruitiness really comes through if given time.

Second third:
The second third starts where the first ended. The pepper is still calmer than the beginning, but it is there. The creaminess is impressive, and the strength is teetering in no man’s land between medium and full.

I was asked to keep it short on this review and an inch in I thought that was an impossible task. I know think it is quite possible. The profile is incredibly consistent. The transitions go back and forth between pepper and creamy fruit. I’m hoping that when I reach halfway I will be proven wrong, but I will not complain either if it stays like this till the end.

Final third:
Exactly what I was hoping for has happened. The back and forth has ended and the final third is distinctly marked by a combination of all the flavours. The pepper is still the hero, but the fruitiness and cedar notes combine beautifully to form a beautiful blend. The strength is back up to medium full.

My mouth has watered throughout this smoke. The lemon cream biscuit notes sit in the back and work their magic to tone down the pepper.

Final thoughts:
This is a power blend. I take back every bad thing I’ve ever said about Rocky Patel. I’ve had a few very good ci**rs from this brand and a few forgettable ones but the LB1 will sit high on my personal favorites. A beautiful medium full cigar with a smooth burn, a perfect draw and a consistently tasty blend.

SAN LOTANO HABANO REQUIEM ROBUSTO

The San Lotano Habano Requiem is made by rising star blender and to***co grower A.J. Fernandez. His ci**rs are known for their bold rich flavours. The San Lotano Habano was blended to satisfy the full-bodied smoker but made in a way to be balanced between strength and flavour. Constructed using a rare Cuban seed ligero wrapper grown only in Brazil by the Fuego family and fillers from Nicaragua, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic.

The cigar has a slightly rustic look. Seams are tight but visible. Lots of veins with a perfect triple cap. A reddish tint to the medium brown wrapper with some oiliness and very smooth to the touch.

Reviews indicate that this cigar is a complex flavourful medley of fruity, nutty notes interspersed with spice, pepper, coffee and leather. It’s a perfectly balanced and full-bodied cigar that definitely requires some respect. It burns evenly with a smooth draw, resulting in rich flavours of to***co and spice followed by a long enjoyable finish. Cigar Aficionado gave it a 91-point rating.

CASA MAGNA COLORADO TORITO

The Casa Magna line of ci**rs started with the collaboration of two cigar legends in the industry, Manuel Quesada and Nestor Plasencia.

Manuel Quesada has been making ci**rs since 1974, but the Casa Magna is considered his greatest innovation. He joined forces with Nicaragua’s largest grower of cigar to***co, Nestor Plasencia, and created this blend in Plasencia’s Segovia Cigar factory.

The Casa Magna Colorado Torito is a thick stubby cigar with a length of 4 and 3/4 inches and a bold heart of Cuban-seed to***co, all of it grown in two very different regions of Nicaragua:
The to***co from Estelí, the area where most Nicaraguan ci**rs are produced, tends to be strong, while that grown in Jalapa, to the north, is typically more balanced and elegant. Together they combine to create a full-flavoured cigar, full of rich coffee notes and balanced by a cedary sweetness with a hint of raisins.

The word “Colorado” in the brand name refers to the dark, slightly reddish hue of the wrapper, which is a rare Cuban seed ligero wrapper leaf with a great sheen and oiliness.

The Casa Magna Colorado was the Cigar Aficionado Number 1 Cigar of the year in 2008 with an outstanding 93-point rating. It also placed 10th in the Top Cigar of the Year in 2011 and received a 92 Rating in 2017.

PORCHIE : TOWN TO TOWN RACE PUZZLE 5000 PIECES

Town to Town Race is an oil painting by the renowned local artist, Porchie. A qualified transport economist, who originally worked for Spoornet, discovered his artistic calling fairly late in life and has now become a prolific painter. He is well known for his expressionistic and impressionistic bright, warm and happy colours.

A painting by Portchie is always intensely colourful - he seems to see the world in terms of warm yellows, vivid blues, bright reds, and intense greens. The reason for the popularity of Portchie's work probably lies in a childhood spent in Tweeling, in the Free State, where the world stretches to eternity and life is simple, but colourful. All his paintings depict ordinary people doing ordinary things.

His original Town to Town Race painting sold for tens of thousands of rands, but if you are a Porchie fan and a puzzle fan, then this beautiful painting can be brought to life in your own home. This new, soft touch satin finish puzzle will be fun to build and to frame.

The 5000 pieces are split into two bags of 2500 pieces each, cutting down on your workspace size and enabling you to build each half of the puzzle on a 3000 piece roll up mat. The completed puzzle size is 1845 x 1060 mm.

CAO MEDIO TIEMPO ROBUSTO

Our cigar aficionado client, Alastair, tried out the latest CAO Medio Tiempo Robusto which is the latest addition to our humidor, and here is what he had to say:

This Robusto from the Dominican Republic has a dark, oily wrapper with a basic but complimentary band of black and gold. Fruity dark chocolate off the foot. Smooth with a slightly fruity note on the cold draw.

The first third starts with fruity spices from the get-go. This quickly transitions to a very forward note of nuts with a slight white pepper rounding it off. The slight hints of fruit and dark chocolate will make your mouth water. Clean clouds of smoke pour from this dark wrapper with a beautiful white ash sitting on top. The medium strength really allows you to fully experience all the individual notes without being overpowered.

The second third starts with a very pronounced peanut and chocolate note, with pepper and ginger notes rounding off the experience. Around the halfway point, cocoa and chocolate steps forward with extremely large shoulders. You can enjoy these notes for a fair share of the second third. Near the end of the second third, there is a lovely meatiness in flavour and aroma that leaps out of nowhere.

The final third is where the pepper and fruitiness really shine. The strength has been a consistent medium which allows one to pick up on all the transitions that take place. The transitions are frequent but smooth. This is a complex cigar of medium strength that can be enjoyed by novices and experienced smokers alike. A very enjoyable cigar that I will be adding to my roster. The smoke time was an hour and fifty minutes.
