Strongbow is named after a real knight. 🏰

The English c***r maker Bulmer named it after 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗱𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗲, a knight who died in 𝟭𝟭𝟳𝟲 and is still known by his nickname, Strongbow.

It was believed that the nickname came from his heavy reliance on archers. That theory is unlikely to be true.

The twist: his father, Gilbert de Clare, was called Strongbow first. That suggests Richard inherited the nickname from his father.

So the name on a bottle of 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗯𝗼𝘄 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲 is a knight's nickname, still on the label today.

It can't be called Ch*****ne, so South Africa gave it its own name. ✨

Under European rules, only sparkling w**e from the Ch*****ne region of France may carry that name. So when South African farms make bubbly the traditional way, with the w**e fermented right in the bottle, it goes by Méthode Cap Classique, or 𝗠𝗖𝗖 for short.

It started in 𝟭𝟵𝟳𝟭, on a farm in Stellenbosch. That year the farm released the first South African sparkling w**e made by that bottle-fermented method.

The early ones were made from Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc. These days more and more are made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the classic Ch*****ne grapes.

Today, 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟯 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿, is Ch*****ne Day. Did you know ours has its own name?

In 1895, one b**r built a brewery. 🍺

That b**r was 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿. Its story starts in the Johannesburg gold rush, when Charles Glass of the Castle Brewery started selling b**r to the miners. It caught on fast. In 1889, one of the city's early newspapers called it "a phenomenal success."

In 𝟭𝟴𝟵𝟱, on the back of Castle's success, South African Breweries was founded, and the Castle Brewery became its head office. One b**r, and a whole company grew out of it.

Last year SAB marked 𝟭𝟯𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀. The name on the can still goes back to that gold-rush brewery.
