Scientists are warning that a powerful El Niño weather event could develop later this year, with some experts saying it has the potential to become the strongest on record.

Current forecasts place the chance of El Niño developing at around 61%, with a 25% chance of reaching "super El Niño" strength - a rare event linked to floods, droughts, wildfires and record-breaking temperatures around the world.

Researchers say global temperatures are already at unusually high levels, meaning a strong El Niño could amplify extreme weather conditions in many regions during 2026 and 2027.

Experts stress that forecasts can still change, but the Pacific Ocean is being closely monitored as one of the most significant climate events in years may be developing beneath the surface.

If a snake bites you, you don't chase it for answers or try to prove you didn't deserve it.
You move toward safety, you heal, and you keep going.
The same applies to people.

UNEMPLOYMENT COMMUNITY CHAT:
"People pays R300 at one of the recruitment agencies so where are we going as people if am going to expect you to give me R300 for a job? We don't differ from some of municipality officials expecting thousands of rands for employment or even s in exchange for employment, unemployment will always be high if HR people don't stop being cold
Mining industry : bribe/ s
Municipality : bribe/s
Recruitment agency : bribe and flirting
And now year in year out companies takes advantages in hiring vuselela learners paying them less money for training avoiding to hire us so we will talk but nothing will happen we are doomed as south africans"

Let's talk about applying for unemployment benefits and for jobs:
A community member writes, " We feel that unemployed rate here (NW province at 56%).
So many people standing in the lines at Potch labour office because Klerksdorp branch isn't fully operational.
At least 400 people everytime.
Our applications dissappear into the masses and therefore we don't get work.
Workplaces receive hundreds of cv's for one position advertised, so the person with the actual experience gets overlooked because they don't have time to scan through 500 cv's."

Question: How many of the unemployed people in North West, are actually from the North West?

UNANNOUNCED OPERATION SHANELA 2 MAINTAINS PRESSURE JOUBERTON, ALABAMA AND KANANA

A coordinated, intelligence-driven operation was conducted in Jouberton, Alabama and Kanana on Saturday, 16 May 2026, targeting supply chains and support networks, linked to street-level drug activity and illegal trade.

Operation teams converged on identified drug and illegal trade hotspots in a synchronized effort aimed at denying criminals operational space and disrupting illicit activities. The operation had a twofold focus: disrupting narcotics activity at street level and applying regulatory pressure on liquor outlets suspected of non-compliance with the law.

Building on intelligence gathered during the initial phase, the team arrested two male suspects, aged 44 and 46, for allegedly selling liquor without a licence in Jouberton. In addition, a 37-year-old male suspect was arrested for possession of multiple tablets suspected to be Mandrax.

The Provincial Anti-Gang Unit, Tactical Response Team (TRT), K9 Unit, FLASH, and Corporate Communication and Liaison continued with high-visibility patrols, as well as stop-and-search activities, to eliminate criminal threats and enhance public safety.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Dr Ryno Naidoo, thanked the teams for their continued efforts in creating safer communities and warned crime facilitators that the cost of criminal activity would outweigh any profit gained from it. He further assured communities that high-visibility policing and targeted enforcement operations would continue in identified hotspots to reclaim public spaces and eliminate illicit drugs.

Stilfontein is gatvol. The sewer pumps are not working and sewage runs straight into the pannetjie, with the air permanently smelling foul.
Wayne Knighton writes: "Stilfontein, we have a serious problem.
The condition of our “pannejie” has become unacceptable. The smell this morning alone is overwhelming — thick, rotten, and impossible to ignore. The water is no longer water… it’s solid green, stagnant, and contaminated. Raw sewer is clearly flowing into it from blocked and neglected drainage systems.
This is not just unpleasant — this is a major public health risk.
Stagnant, polluted water like this becomes a breeding ground for harmful bacteria, parasites, and disease-carrying insects. It contaminates the air we breathe, worsens sinus and respiratory conditions, and places our most vulnerable — especially the elderly in our many old age homes — in real danger. With winter starting, these risks only increase.
But here is the real question:
Why has the NPOS not visited or addressed this site?
This is not a small issue. This is a visible, ongoing environmental and health hazard affecting an entire town. How can something this serious be ignored?
Let’s be honest:
We are being forced to live in conditions that resemble a sewer plant.
And yet, less than a 2 kilometer away, officials gather, meetings happen, and still this is left untouched.
This is not just neglect.
This is a slap in the face to every resident of Stilfontein.
We deserve clean, safe surroundings.
We deserve accountability.
We deserve action.
How long are we expected to live like this?
Wrotten smelling town, days without water, days with our power, months to years without service delivery some potholes are older then 3 years Street lights not working for years and we beg everyday and then we are told we must stop being so negitave and it's always just reported but there is never action and this is going on for years.
I think it's time to take our town back and demand as this is our town we pay to stay here and we pay for service deliver that we don't get. It's time we stand together and fight for our right Stilfonteiners. "
