Saturday Sipping Session with Carinus Family Vineyards
12 September from 11am - 2 pm

Danie and Hugo are sixth generation w**e grape growers with well-established vineyards in the Swartland, as well as Devon Valley and Polkadraai in Stellenbosch. The two friends – and distant relatives – began making w**e in 2011. This was how Carinus Family Vineyards began.

Danie is from Bluegum Grove, located in Polkadraai, Stellenbosch. With its unique, coarsely grained granite soils, Polkadraai has emerged in recent years as an esteemed grape-growing area that has both connoisseurs and critics very excited.

Hugo is from Fransmanskraal and Dwars-in-die-Weg in Stellenbosch. He is also responsible for farming Rooidraai Farm, outside Malmesbury in the Swartland. Rooidraai, with its iron-rich granitic soil and excellent water-holding capacity, is also where it all started for Hugo and Danie in 2011, when they made their first Chenin Blanc w**e.

Carinus Family Vineyards collaborate with exceptional w**emakers to produce their limited range, prizing quality over quantity. These w**es are made with minimal intervention to honour the terroir where the vines are rooted, matured in natural vessels, including old French oak barrels and concrete eggs.

A podium moment for one of our favourites. 🍷

We’ve had Jolandie Fouché’s Wolf & Woman w**es on the W**e Menu shelves from the very beginning, so seeing her named Young W**emaker of the Year in Tim Atkin MW’s 2026 South Africa Special Report feels particularly special.

Atkin describes Jolandie’s OVP Chenin Blanc 2025, which scored an impressive 96 points, as a “superb Swartland Chenin Blanc”. Made from four vineyards planted between 1976 and 1984, it brings together granite and iron-rich soils, with white florals, structure, concentration and layers of waxed lemon, juniper and aniseed.

Perhaps Jolandie herself says it best when talking about the Swartland in the report:

“The region is so diverse it’s insane.”

That curiosity about place is written all over the Wolf & Woman w**es. They are distinctive, thoughtful and unmistakably Swartland, without ever feeling overworked.

We backed these w**es early because we loved what was in the bottle. Watching the rest of the w**e world take notice makes us immensely proud.

A w**emaker with a serious Chardonnay reputation. A handful of new releases. And a few older bottles pulled in to show exactly where they’re going.

Matthew van Heerden joins us at W**e Menu on 16 September for a proper look through his MVH Signature and Vine & Co w**es.

We’ll taste the new Elgin and Hemel & Aarde Ridge Pinot Noirs, new Cabernet releases, the Platter 5-star MVH Signature Chardonnay 2022 and, rather brilliantly, an Elgin Pinot Noir from 2013 alongside the new vintage.

Nine w**es. One table. Plenty to talk about.

We have a super cool tasting coming up this month with Gavin Bruwer Slabbert of B Vintners.

Wednesday 23 September
B Vintners is the Stellenbosch-born collaboration of cousins Bruwer Raats and Gavin Bruwer Slabbert, exploring the Cape’s heritage varieties and exceptional vineyard sites. With a light touch and a deep respect for place, their w**es bring together old vines, distinctive terroir and a fresh perspective on South Africa’s vinous heritage. Think character, precision an a little bit of Cape history in ever bottle.

A tasting with Gavin is a chance to go beyond what’s in the glass. Expect stories from the vineyards, insight into the people and places behind the w**es, and a closer look at what makes Stellenbosch such a compelling w**e region. Gavin brings an easy, engaging energy to the table, making this as much about discovery and conversation as it is about tasting exceptional w**es.

Saturday Sipping – Capelands & Lenuzza
5 September 11 am to 2 pm

Capelands is a picturesque w**e estate in Somerset West, founded in 2004 by Johann Innerhofer and Laura Mauri. Inspired by Johann’s European w**e heritage and his love of classic w**es, Capelands brings together Italian soul and South African terroir. Its dry-farmed, low-yielding old vines produce elegant, expressive w**es with freshness and character, made in small quantities and with plenty of patience.

Lenuzza Vineyards began with the meeting of South African, Tanika and Italian third-generation w**emaker, Daniele Lenuzza, whose family has been making w**e in Friuli for generations. Together, they followed their dream of creating a w**e project in South Africa. Today, they produce Pinot Noir from the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge and Old Bush Vine Chenin Blanc from the Swartland focusing on low-intervention w**emaking and sustainable farming.

The latest releases Mullineux have arrived, and this is a release worth paying attention to.

Few South African producers carry quite the same sense of stature. These are w**es built with seriousness, precision and remarkable longevity, and each new release feels like a moment in its own right.
Last week Andrea visited us to share these new vintages with our customers. Each w**e carries a true sense of place and time. The 2025 Chenin Blancs are expressing their individuality better than ever and the Syrah continues to make everyone pay attention. We were also spoiled with a rare tasting of Olerasay Straw W**e °6, a remarkable w**e of concentrated flavours and showing that patience and long term planning pays off.

This week brought another reason to celebrate. Mullineux Olerasay Straw W**e °6 was named Tim Atkin MW’s Sweet W**e of the Year in his 2026 South Africa Special Report.
It is a fitting accolade for one of the most extraordinary w**es in the Mullineux cellar, and a reminder that sweet w**e, at this level, belongs firmly among the great w**es of the world.

The new Mullineux releases are now available at W**e Menu, online and in store, including Olerasay °6.

For collectors, Mullineux devotees and anyone looking to put something genuinely special in the cellar, now is the time.

The Atkin Report is out, and today feels a little like cheering from the sidelines for a very talented group of friends.

The 2026 report saw just one perfect 100-point w**e, one at 99, and 18 w**es at 98 points from 1,831 w**es tasted. It’s easy to get lost in all the scores, but of more value is the time and effort that goes into putting the first 52 pages together. An in depth analysis of the state of South African w**e and well worth a read.

A huge congratulations to Sadie Family Columella 2024, taking the extraordinary 100 points and Red W**e of the year, alongside brilliant 99 points for Alheit Huilkrans Chenin Blanc 2025 and White W**e of the year.
Among the 98-pointers are the familiar names of Storm, Porseleinberg, Mullineux, Boschkloof and Van Loggerenberg.

More than the scores, though, we’re incredibly proud to see so many producers, w**emakers and w**es we love gracing these pages. People whose bottles fill our shelves, our glasses and, rather wonderfully, our hearts too.
W**emaker of the year goes to Hannes Storm and Young W**emaker of the Year goes to Jolandie Fouche. Well done to all who received a special mention this year. All very well deserved.

Porseleinberg doesn’t arrive in the down-low. It arrives with a pedigree and you can set your clock to it.
1 September every year!

Born from that now-legendary Swartland Syrah vineyard, with its original 1997 mother block still at the heart of the w**e, Porseleinberg has become one of the Cape’s most compelling expressions of Syrah.

The 2024 Porseleinberg comes from organically grown fruit on those rugged schist soils. Predominantly whole-cluster, spontaneously fermented in concrete and matured for 12 months, in foudre and 10% concrete eggs. It’s a w**e built with remarkably little fuss around some very serious fruit.

Densely flavoured, but with a freshness through the core, fine-grained tannin and that lovely sense of structure and persistence that makes you suspect this bottle has a very long story ahead of it.

Porseleinberg 2024 is available at W**e Menu like clockwork from 1 September. If you haven’t dropped a request yet, now’s the time.

For the collectors, the Syrah devotees, and anyone who understands that some bottles are worth making room for in the cellar.

Enjoy delicious w**e while doing good.
The Kruger Carnivore Fund needs your help and Painted Wolf w**es has made it easy for all of us to get behind this great initiative.

Kruger National Park turns 100 this year and most South Africans have visited this national treasure at least once in their lives. Some of us visit regularly and don’t necessarily think about everything going on in the background to protect the animals. Think about all the beautiful sunsets, breathtaking moments watching predators in their natural habitat or the excitement of a night drive.
These moments aren’t guaranteed. In the northern part of the Kruger National Park, lion numbers have declined dramatically since 2005, driven largely by targeted poaching. Across Africa, cheetahs have lost 90% of their historic range, while fewer than 6600 African Wild Dogs remain in the wild.

Painted Wolf has put a six-pack of delicious w**es together to help fund conservation efforts. The box includes Pictus X 2023 white, Pictus IX 2021 red, Lycaon Pinotage 2022, Scarlet Syrah 2022, Lycaon Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2023 and Lightning Sauvignon Blanc 2022. These are serious w**es too, with Platter’s 4–4.5 star ratings and 90+ scores from Tim Atkin among the line-up.

Painted Wolf has donated 6,000 bottles to the project, with R600 from every R995 case sold going directly towards carnivore conservation, working with the SANParks Honorary Rangers and Endangered Wildlife Trust. Their goal is to raise R700,000 and we’ve decided to do our bit to help.

So yes, technically buying w**e can help protect the wild things.
A very good excuse for a six-pack, we think.

Saturday Sipping With Bruce Jack W**es, this Saturday - 29 August.

A slightly more curious line-up for this Saturday. Bruce Jack w**es that wander a little off the well-trodden path.

Bruce Jack has never been particularly interested in making w**e by formula. His world is one of interesting vineyards, unusual varieties, experimentation and plenty of personality. The Ghost in the Machine w**es lean right into that spirit. Small-batch, characterful w**es that play with variety, texture and expectation. Then there’s The Drift, Bruce’s more intimate Overberg project, where site and patience get to do the talking.

This Saturday we’re opening:

Ghost in the Machine Skin Chenin Blanc 2024
Chenin with its sleeves rolled up. Skin contact brings texture, grip and another dimension to a grape we know so well.

Ghost in the Machine Clairette Blanche 2023
Clairette is hardly an everyday sighting, which is precisely why we like it. A lovely chance to taste one of the Cape’s lesser-seen varieties.

Ghost in the Machine Malbec/Viognier 2023
An unexpected marriage. Dark-fruited Malbec meets aromatic Viognier in a blend that sounds slightly mad until it lands in the glass.

The Drift There Are Still Mysteries Pinot Noir 2019
And to finish, a Pinot with a few years behind it. From The Drift Estate in the Overberg, this is the quieter, more contemplative side of Bruce Jack. A w**e worth lingering over.
