Launched in 2017, Roe & Co marked Diageo’s return to Irish whiskey after a two-decade absence. Named in honour of George Roe, a 19th-century whiskey pioneer whose distillery once stood beside the Guinness brewery in Dublin. In 2019, Diageo opened the Roe & Co distillery in the former Guinness Power Station at St. James’s Gate. This premium blended Irish whiskey is made from a high proportion of malt whiskey and is matured entirely in ex-bourbon casks, with a focus on first-fill barrels.

Expect warm hints of woody vanilla, creamy, fragrant and rounded with notes of soft spice with a lingering and gentle finish.

With Ardbeg Distillery’s open day during Fèis Ìle, Islay’s annual malt whisky and music festival, taking place this Saturday, the arrival of Ardbeg Dolce is no coincidence. Created as the distillery’s limited edition release to mark the occasion, Dolce takes its inspiration from La Dolce Vita, the Italian expression for “the sweet life”, and combines Ardbeg’s unmistakable Islay peat with the influence of Marsala dolce casks, the sweet style of Sicily’s famous fortified wine.

Expect apricot, sticky dates with orange marmalade. Cinnamon, star anise and liquorice heat with a long layered finish of smoked applewood and drying to***co.

Two single malts from Hinch Distillery in County Down, Northern Ireland. These white label bottlings are the first whiskies entirely distilled, matured and bottled at Hinch itself.

Both expressions are triple distilled and matured in bourbon and sherry casks, with one offering a classic approachable style, while the other introduces peat smoke balanced by Madeira influence. A noteworthy release for fans of modern Irish single malt.

Nikka From The Barrel Extra Marriage 51.4%, R1,195

A limited edition Japanese blended whisky from Nikka to mark the 40th anniversary of From the Barrel's debut in 1985. The blend draws on over 100 batches of malt and grain whiskies from Nikka's Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries, before being filled into used oak barrels and married for up to six months, double the marrying period used in the original expression.

Expect soft and mellow oak aroma, rich chocolate and refreshing orange peel. Full-bodied, bold flavours with a long subtle bitterness finish.

Taking top spot this month is the Templeton 10yo Single Barrel; with its promotional offer, the bold and spicy character has proven hard to resist for rye whiskey fans. In 2nd place is our Malt of the Month, the Glengoyne 12yo, followed in 3rd by a returning favourite, the GlenAllachie 12yo, now (mostly) back on SA shelves. Following last week’s restock of the core GlenAllachie range, we’ve also secured limited quantities of the cask strength 10 year old..

A small batch release from GlenAllachie in Speyside, first released in 2018 in their Cask Strength series. Matured for 10 years in a combination of Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry puncheons, red wine barriques and virgin oak casks.

Expect mocha, fig syrup and dried red berries. Brandied cherries, toffee sauce and damson plum with a long and warming finish with lingering molasses.

Isle of Raasay The Chinkapin 50.2%, R1,890
Isle of Raasay Marsala Cask 50.7%, R1,890

This week we have two exciting releases from the Isle of Raasay distillery, established in 2017 and situated off the west coast of Scotland.

The Chinkapin is the third release in the distillery’s core range, introduced earlier this year, utilising a specific American oak species typically grown in the Ozarks. While the Marsala Cask, is a limited release from late last year, matured in Sicilian Marsala fortified wine barriques.

Both releases use a combination of peated and unpeated spirit, resulting in a lightly peated style.

We are very pleased to have GlenAllachie, one of Scotland's finest independently owned distilleries, back in stock. Since its acquisition in 2017 by renowned whisky maker Billy Walker (who previously took BenRiach, GlenDronach and Glenglassaugh to fame), the once lesser-known Speyside distillery has emerged from relative obscurity to become highly sought-after, particularly among fans of bold, sherry-forward whiskies.

After several years of intermittent availability and limited allocations in South Africa, we can confirm that the core range will now be available on a consistent and ongoing basis.

Aberargie Inaugural Release 48.2%, R1,790

The very first release from Aberargie distillery in the Scottish Lowlands. Established in 2017 and located on the Highland/Lowland boundary, the distillery distils, matures and bottles entirely on site.

This inaugural release is produced from 52% Golden Promise and 48% Laureate barley, all grown on site, and matured in an equal split of first-fill sherry casks (Oloroso and PX) and first-fill bourbon casks.

Expect lemon peel, vanilla cream with light floral notes. Green apple, honeyed malt and a lingering citrus finish.
