Our Malt of the Month for March is Glen Scotia Double Cask. Buy this Campbeltown, single malt Scotch on special offer during the month and save, while stocks last.

The Double Cask was launched in 2015 as part of the redesigned range and is matured in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels before being finished in ex-Pedro Ximénez sherry casks for up to 12 months.

Expect sweet creme caramel alongside apple and peach. A light mint buzz follows with the drying and oily distillery character, finishing with ginger chocolate, sherry and soft smoke.

It is with a heavy heart that we share some unexpected and unfortunate news. After seven incredible years, our landlords at Morningside have decided not to renew our lease for the WhiskyBrother Bar.

Join us for a final few drams before our last day of trading on Sunday, 30th March, and take advantage of our farewell whisky specials.

While this is undoubtedly a painful setback, we remain fully committed to reopening the bar in a new location. Thank you for your unwavering support over the years. This was not our decision, but we are determined to turn this into an opportunity for something new. 🥃

Okay, as promised, I am only happy to share more about what we are up to in the background (and there is always a lot!). For now, some quick notes on what our exclusive releases are looking like for the year ahead:

▪️8 casks already selected for this year, covering a great range of styles
▪️Another 4 probable releases but not yet selected (I have 10+ cask samples on my desk waiting to be tried, and more are on the way)
▪️We are revisiting distilleries we've had before (GS, GL, AD), as well as new ones we haven't bottled (RA, BN) 🤐
▪️A really good mix of both official bottles and indie releases, as we usually try to do

Hopefully this is of interest. If you give me the same whisky love (aka likes) as the post yesterday, I promise to share more specific details on Signatory releases which are already selected, with one being bottled this week 🤩

For 25 years, the OLD MALT CASK range from renowned independent bottler Hunter Laing has showcased single cask whiskies from nearly every distillery in Scotland. First introduced in 1998 by Stewart Laing, the range became a favourite among whisky enthusiasts for its quality, range and value, bottling whiskies without chill-filtration, naturally coloured and at a higher strength of 50%.

To celebrate this milestone, Hunter Laing returned to the original iconic green bottle and label design for a special set of releases. We were able to secure limited quantities of four of these anniversary whiskies for SA—each reflecting the tradition and expertise behind the Old Malt Cask name.

NEW EXCLUSIVE 🆕
McConnell's 20yo Port Finish 51%, R4,190

Although released last month, we haven't shared the exciting news here to all of our followers of this stunning exclusive single cask, selected by our team, from McConnell's Irish whiskey! This is our first Irish whiskey exclusive, which is a little crazy considering it is our 95 whisky release, spanning 7 different countries!

Distilled in 2003, matured in a first-fill ex-bourbon cask for 18 years then finished in a first-fill Tawny port cask for over two years. Non-chillfiltered, naturally coloured and bottled at a cask strength of 51.2%.

The McConnell's distillery only started production last year, so until they have more mature stock, the relies on sourcing from older and more established distilleries-a very common trend in Ireland. (Although we cannot name the distillery, we can say it is based in northern Ireland and reputed to be the oldest in the country!)

A newcomer to the SA whisky scene, released late last year, Mansas African Whisky is crafted at the Midlands Distillery in Kwazulu-Natal by Spearhead Spirits, who produce a range of proudly South African spirits.

Using South African maize along with sorghum, rye and barley, the whisky is matured in a selection of locally sourced, reconditioned ex-red wine barrels, that are heavily charred, in temperature controlled warehouse for between 3 to 5 years.

Edradour 10yo Small Batch 46%, R1,390

There are far less fully matured, European oak, heavily-sherried whiskies available these days compared to several years ago (not just in SA, mind you), so we arranged this gem with our friends at Edradour to offer an "old school" sherried whisky at a fair price, and to have something more standard (not single cask, not cask strength) available from this great distillery.

This small batch release is a vatting of only two casks, both fully matured for 10 years in first-fill ex-Oloroso sherry butts. Although not detailed on the label, this batch is specifically for South Africa in 750ml, with a total of 1,574 bottles.

Ardnahoe Infinite Loch 50%, R1,290

For the lovers of peated whisky, we have a very exciting, brand new release from Islay's newest distillery and the first core release from the producer. Peated to 40ppm, Matured for 5 years in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-Oloroso sherry casks. Non-chillfiltered, naturally coloured and bottled at a higher strength of 50%.

The distillery was built in 2018 by the Hunter Laing family, who have been independent bottlers and blenders since their founding in 1948. This release, only the 2nd from the distillery after their inaugural whisky, is named after the distillery's water source, Loch Ardnahoe, Islay’s so-called 'Infinite Loch' because no-one knows the extent of its watery depths.

BACK IN STOCK 🏷️
Red Spot 15yo 46%, R2,050

Red Spot, after being discontinued in the mid-1960s, was reintroduced by owner Irish Dstillers' in 2018 and joined "The Spot", range next to the Green Spot and Yellow Spot, as the oldest in the line-up.

Produced at the New Midleton distillery based on an old recipe, Red Spot is matured for at least 15 years in a combination of ex-bourbon, Oloroso sherry and marsala fortified wine casks. Non-chillfiltered and bottled at 46%.

Expect typical pot still spices with rich cooked fruit, baked apple, mango and black cherry. Hazelnut and a touch of new leather fuse with toasted American oak.

(We aren't sure if "Back in Stock" is the correct label for this as it has been over 5 years since stock was last avialable on our shelves in SA!)

Smokehead Termindao 46%, R995

Smokehead is a single malt Scotch whisky from Islay, produced at an undisclosed distillery, and bottled by Ian Macleod Distillers, owners of the Tamdhu, Glengoyne and Rosebank distilleries.

The range has seen new editions over recent years, including this limited-edition first launched in 2022 and now available in SA. More on the experimental side, Terminado (meaning 'finished' in Spanish), sees the peated single malt finished in Tequila casks, which only recent were permitted for use, for a new dimension of flavour.

Expect peat smoke with vanilla and shortbread, mixed with chewy meringue and almonds. Barbecued pineapple and citrus follows with toffee, peach and burnt corn-on-the-cob.

Ardnamurchan 10yo 50%, R1,490

A very special, limited edition from Ardnamurchan in the Highlands, released in celebration of the distillery's 10th anniversary!

Somewhat unusual for the distillery, this release is completely unpeated, and matured for 10 years in first-fill ex-bourbon casks before approximately half of the batch was finished in Paul Lanais Champagne barriques for over a year. 15,000 bottles were produced. Non-chillfiltered, naturally coloured and bottled at a higher strength.

Expect a stunningly oily and waxy dram with tropical fruits (ripe mangoes, pineapple cubes) and honey. There are baked bananas, brown sugar, figs, and wine gums with warming spices, cedar and chocolate.

Hailing from one of Scotland's most northerly distilleries, Old Pulteney resides in the old fishing village of Wick. The entry malt in the distillery’s core range, Old Pulteney 12yo is matured exclusively in air-dried, hand-selected ex-bourbon casks for 12 years.

Expect a briny hint of sea air, medium bodied and balanced, with honey, cream with a slight spiciness.
