KERALA STYLE FRIED FISH | I was dreaming about this fish fry for the longest time! It was soooo worth the wait!!

Frying this fish in coconut oil with fresh curry leaves makes a world of difference! Try it out and let me know how you liked it! 😃

This fish was fried for dinner for me & hubby. The silverfish was actually really tasty & had very little bones in it (just the main bone & little on the sides) hence even my hubby ate it! Definitely give it a try.

I got my fresh fish from but I always check the eyes of the fish for freshness (check for clear eyes). I also check with them when the fish was brought in as sometimes they have previously frozen fish. I always like to use the freshest catch when making whole fried fish.

KERALA MASALA FISH FRY | Try it out

Guys, I marinated this fish two days ago (I just haven't had the time to fry & eat this yet) and it's been sitting in my fridge waiting to get fried - hehe. I'm definitely craving this fish fry with rice & moru today after my 14km run yesterday! So I thought I'd share my lunch special with you!

This is not for sale... But I just wanted to share what I'm having for lunch and hope to inspire you to have some lovely masala coated fish!

I used fresh silver fish and I cut deep slits on the fish to get the masala into the fish nicely.

Ingredients (don't have measurements as I just winged it - story of my life lol):
- chilli powder
- turmeric
- black pepper (fresh & coarse)
- vinegar
- salt
- freshly grated ginger & garlic

Let the fish marinate for at least 2 hours & then shallow fry in coconut oil & curry leaves for the ultimate Kerala taste! YUMMM!! Also be sure to eat with your hands for a true culinary cultural experience! :)

- Sher's lamb biriyani (lamb curry layered with mint, coriander fried onions, fragrant basmati rice, homemade ghee, saffron milk, more fried onions, coriander, mint and topped with roasted cashew nuts)
- Kerala lamb curry (made with spices, masala & coconut cream)
- Amma's lamb stew (made with cinnamon, clove, cardomom, carrots, peas & coconut cream)
- parripu curry / ghee (made with red lentils & our homemade ghee)

These are just SOME of the ingredients that go into our dishes! LOVE is the main ingredient! 🥰

At SADYA, every dish starts with a foundation of ingredients that are simple — but powerful. These are the real heroes behind the deep, soulful flavours in our kitchen:

🧅 Red & Yellow Onions:
Traditionally, Kerala dishes use shallots (small red onions), but since they’re hard to find in Cape Town, we use the next best thing:
🔴 Red onions – slightly sharp and sweet, perfect for slow roasting to bring out that rich curry base.
🟡 Yellow onions – mellow and golden, ideal for sambars, dhals/parripu and stews.
The trick? Caramelise them just right in coconut oil and you’ve got the start of something magical.

🫚 Ginger:
Fresh, spicy and earthy — it adds warmth and a signature kick to both veg and non-veg dishes. Always crushed or grated, never skipped.

🧄 Garlic:
Used generously, garlic deepens the flavour base and gives that unmistakable Kerala aroma when fried with mustard seeds and curry leaves.
