[“God of Kitchen Day”]
“God of Kitchen Day” is called “Tết Táo Quân” or “Lễ Ông Công Công Táo” in Vietnamese!
🧧Tết Táo Quân is a traditional Vietnamese holiday celebrated on the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month, usually in January or February. It’s dedicated to honoring the Kitchen Gods, who are believed to watch over the household and report back to the Jade Emperor.
On this day, you could see the Vietnamese do some traditions like:
🧹Cleaning the kitchen: Families thoroughly clean their kitchens because it is believed to be the Kitchen Gods’ departure.
🙏Offerings: People offer food, incense, and other items to the Kitchen Gods, usually on an altar or shrine. They believe that this day is the time for Tao Quan to ride to heaven to report to the Jade Emperor about the family’s affair over the past year and determine the owner’s fortune or misfortune in the next year, so this offering is to send off these deities.
🎏Burning paper horses or Releasing fish: In some places, they believed that Kitchen Gods ride carp to heaven, while the others thought these deities would use the horses. As the farewell to Tao Quan, the locals burn the paper horses, releasing the live carps into ponds, canals, or rivers. In Hanoi, nowadays, almost all people will release the golden carps.
🧧Tết Táo Quân marks the beginning of the Lunar New Year preparations and is a time for people to start cleaning and renewing their houses, preparing traditional dishes, buying treats and tea for the upcoming Tet.
🧧By honoring the Kitchen Gods, Vietnamese people seek to maintain harmony, balance, and prosperity in their lives.
This year, the God of Kitchen Day falls on 22Jan.
