How to enjoy Tet like a Hanoian

There are only two days left until Lunar New Year Day. How have you prepared for this day? Have you known how to dine like a Hanoian during the holiday? Let’s check out the list below:

Bánh chưng: Bánh chưng is the must-have dishes in a meal on Tet holiday. This square-shaped glutinous rice cake is quite famous, so it is easy to find out some information about it. Just a note: Bánh chưng is quite big for a portion,
Nem rán: Nem rán is also a famous ones, normally known as Spring rolls.
Giò lụa and chả quế: Two types of Vietnamese sausage.
Gà luộc (boiled chicken): This is the best way to enjoy the taste of chicken, especially when you can find out the restaurant which has the good quality of true Vietnamese chicken.
Canh bóng: “bóng” is not a ball, it is a type of ingredient which is made from pork skin, and canh bóng is a great type of soup made with bóng, mushrooms and some vegetables.
Canh măng

And some others dishes that we cannot list and describe here because of the character limit for an Instagram post. If you have your meal in a Vietnamese food restaurant, you should order these courses, share them with your beloved people and enjoy the taste of this place.

[“God of Kitchen Day”]
“God of Kitchen Day” is called “Tết Táo Quân” or “Lễ Ông Công Công Táo” in Vietnamese!

🧧Tết Táo Quân is a traditional Vietnamese holiday celebrated on the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month, usually in January or February. It’s dedicated to honoring the Kitchen Gods, who are believed to watch over the household and report back to the Jade Emperor.

On this day, you could see the Vietnamese do some traditions like:
🧹Cleaning the kitchen: Families thoroughly clean their kitchens because it is believed to be the Kitchen Gods’ departure.
🙏Offerings: People offer food, incense, and other items to the Kitchen Gods, usually on an altar or shrine. They believe that this day is the time for Tao Quan to ride to heaven to report to the Jade Emperor about the family’s affair over the past year and determine the owner’s fortune or misfortune in the next year, so this offering is to send off these deities.
🎏Burning paper horses or Releasing fish: In some places, they believed that Kitchen Gods ride carp to heaven, while the others thought these deities would use the horses. As the farewell to Tao Quan, the locals burn the paper horses, releasing the live carps into ponds, canals, or rivers. In Hanoi, nowadays, almost all people will release the golden carps.

🧧Tết Táo Quân marks the beginning of the Lunar New Year preparations and is a time for people to start cleaning and renewing their houses, preparing traditional dishes, buying treats and tea for the upcoming Tet.

🧧By honoring the Kitchen Gods, Vietnamese people seek to maintain harmony, balance, and prosperity in their lives.

This year, the God of Kitchen Day falls on 22Jan.

🏮What tourists should do in Vietnam during Tet Holiday

🌸On previous post, we introduced you Tet - an important holiday of Vietnamese people. If you have a chance to visit our country during Tet, these following are our recommendations for you to have the best experience at this special time of the year:

✅Due to the temporary closure of the stores, you should research and make a list of places which are open during the holiday to visit, stay and dine out.
🙅‍♀️Avoid haggling, especially on 29Jan: because this is the 1st day of the Lunar New Year, and it is considered auspicious. Haggling on Tet is believed to attract bad luck for the whole year, so it might offend the merchants. You should research prices to avoid overpaying, and if the price is higher than expected, you can choose between buying or not.
✅Attending locals traditions and activities:
🎆Watch fireworks: there would be some fireworks performances at midnight on Lunar New Year Eve.
🪭Wear áo dài, other Vietnamese traditional dresses or your country’s traditional dresses.
⛩️Go to temples or other religious places to wish for a brighter new year.
🧧Give lucky money: lucky money is a small amount of money put in a red envelope. It is believed to bring good fortune, prosperity, and happiness to recipients. Lucky money usually is given to children or elders, but you can give it to your friends for best wishes.

[Cultural Exploration]
[Vietnamese Tet Holiday]

🌸Although Vietnamese people also celebrate the first day of January, Tet Holiday is still our most important festival.

🌸Tet, a.k.a. Lunar New Year, is the first day of the lunar calendar which is used by some East Asian countries including Vietnam.

🌸The holiday usually lasts 5 to 9 days. It is time for people to prepare for and celebrate Tet.
🪷Before Tet, the locals spend their time sweeping and cleaning, decorating their houses, and preparing some traditional dishes such as bánh chưng, giò (a type of Vietnamese sausage), and so on.
🪷During Tet Holiday, Vietnamese people will put all their work aside to return to their hometowns for family gathering, visiting their relatives, go to temples to pray for good luck and prosperity, or travel.
🪷During the first month of the lunar year, many traditional festivals will be occured in some villages. Each festival and activity has its own meaning.

🌸Therefore, if you visit Vietnam these days, you could feel it very different than any other time of the year. The roads are busier and more crowded. The stores are decorated and full of seasonal items, which are usually wrapped with red and gold coloured packages. More fairs are held, especially flower fairs. Seasonal flowers and plants are sold along the streets, like peach blossom branches or kumquat trees.

Due to the rise of demands, the prices would be higher than normal.

🗓️This year, the Lunar New Year falls on 29 Jan.

It would be a little inconvenient, but lots of great experiences are awaiting you to explore!

Don’t forget to check out our store. We do not close even on holidays (open hours might differ).

[Travel tips by Song Thu]

🎭Hanoi Opera House is one of the greatest architecture to visit in Hanoi.

🎭Many visitors want to explore, not only the outside but also the inside of this building.

🎭At this time, the only way for you to access the inside of Hanoi Opera House is attending a concert/performance.
❗️But it seems a little hard for foreigners to find out the performance schedule. Because:
- Hanoi Opera House website and fanpage are not really updated, almost contents are in Vietnamese so it’s hard for foreigners to understand.
- The performances are held by different organisations: Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, Vietnam National Opera and Ballet Orchestra, Vietnam National Drama Theatre, and so on. And each of them have their own fanpage, website to announce the schedule, different ticket sellers, so it is not easy to follow.
- They don’t really have a yearly schedule. Many performances are announced only a few weeks before. The ticket are sold almost by traditional way: offline at ticket box or through some sellers, only some concerts sell ticket online but via the 3rd website,…
- And might be some other reasons…

🎫We are not the ticket seller, but, we are Hanoian, so we really appreciate people who love our home-city and also want to help them explore this place. We are Vietnamese so it could be easier for us to check the information and schedule.
And we was there some times, so maybe we can give you some advices about choosing the good seat (errr…, not sure, but we will try our best).

🌟If you want more tips about traveling in Hanoi, feel free to inbox/DM us! We don’t know everything, but we will try our best to help you.
