Wine with dinner…check this review on Cline Viognier from our friend the wine Mizer!

Viognier? It’s a grape. It’s used for white , almost always dry but can be made off-dry and even sweet. Viognier joins Gewurztraminer, Muscat and some Riesling as the most aromatic of wines. In France, it is associated with the Northern Rhone Valley, although some is grown south in the Languedoc-Roussillon which offers a more rustic style. Within the Northern Rhone Valley, the AOC of Condrieu is noted for producing the most exceptional wines and all so designated must be made from 100% viognier. Prices in the U.S. will average between $50 - $75. Why the expense? Condrieu is one of the smallest areas within the Northern Rhone. The entire vineyard area is just 420 acers. Condrieu is noted for old vines and as an area difficult to work. Production is limited. It makes wine that is uplifting to enjoy and is hauntingly memorable. If you haven’t stopped reading, you should note that from Sonoma, California makes a Viognier and has been making wine since 1982. The grapes Cline uses for this wine are from the north coast (a good area for this grape). It is vinted & bottled by Cline. I enjoyed a 2023 Viognier that was generous with peach, apricot, honeysuckle, pineapple and citrus. Its clean finish makes it a good companion to seared scallops, grilled apricots (or peaches), Thai curries, or many dishes made with orange (zest & juice) and ginger. And if you still haven’t stopped reading, note that the ARP for this wine (per ) is $15 and I found it at for just $12.99. Thanks go out to Cline for giving everyone an opportunity to taste this varietal and enjoy its unique character. Alc: 14%.
