During the Prohibition era (1920–1933), American moonshiners devised ingenious methods to evade law enforcement while producing and transporting illicit alcohol. One such tactic involved the use of "cow shoes"—wooden footwear attachments carved to resemble bovine hooves. By strapping these devices to their boots, moonshiners left hoof-like imprints in soft ground, effectively disguising their human tracks as those of cattle.
