Brick & mortar + online wine retail store managed by an industry veteran with 40+ years experience in all facets of the WA/Domestic & French/European wine industries. Our founder, Ed Schlich, has over 40 years of experience in the industry and has been learning and applying his knowledge around the world. Established in Tumwater, WA we provide wines from all over the world including Washington, Oregon, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Australia/New Zealand, California, South America, and the Middle East (Israel, Lebanon). CASTEL PUJOL 🍷 🇺🇾

We were visited this past week by the representative of CASTEL PUJOL of Uruguay. This was one of our most intriguing visits to date. If ever you can’t find Ed, you can trust that he will be just fine, sipping w**e on a vineyard in Uruguay.

In 1973, Quico Carrau Pujol (grandfather of the woman in this photo) in collaboration with the University of California Davis, began the search for a terroir to plant the first virus-free vines. This place had to have qualities that would adapt to the climate of Uruguay, sandy soils and slopes that would allow good drainage to avoid excess water in the vine.

Alas, CASTEL PUJOL is located in the Cerro Chapeu region, far inland in Uruguay. Not only did it meet the rigorous qualifications the team sought, but this region is also one of the purest environments according to the environmental sustainability indices (ESI) of Columbia and Yale universities.

They are one of the largest exporters of sustainable, low intervention w**es in Uruguay. The whites sing with floral and stone fruit aromatics, the reds stun with depth and crushability.

Tracey’s Pick! Have you tried the Peju Merlot before?

1983, Tony and Herta (HB) Peju purchased thirty acres of vines in the famed Rutherford district of Napa Valley. They worked hard to build a w**ery, plant estate vineyards and raise their family. PEJU remains family-owned with Tony and HB’s two daughters, Ariana and Lisa, guiding the business today. Ariana and Lisa are bringing fresh ideas while maintaining the meticulous focus on quality that began 40 years ago. They are certified organic, sustainable and certified Fish Friendly Farming.

The 2021 vintage is unique in its flavor & depth. PEJU reports “The 2021 vintage will be remembered for low yields with intensely-flavored, small-sized berries, and a smooth harvest season. The season started off with very li le rain, leading to the 2nd year of drought conditions in Napa Valley. The drought of 2021 resulted in a more natural load on the vines, requiring less pruning and dropping of fruit. The
resulting grapes were packed full of flavor.”

With a 16month, 35% new oak aging program, this w**e has beautiful depth and integration of flavor.
