A well-made Mint Julep, the official drink of the Kentucky Derby, is the most underrated warm weather cocktail, full stop 🏇

We’re recommending our private barrel of Angel’s Envy as the base, muddled with fresh mint! If you want to take hold of the reigns and make your own, here’s our recipe:

🥃 Pour .25oz simple syrup in a rocks glass, or, ideally, a chilled Julep cup
🌿Muddle 8-10 fresh mint leaves in the syrup
🥄Pour in 2oz bourbon, fill tightly with crushed ice, insert a thin cocktail stirrer down the side and agitate so all ingredients get incorporated.
❄️ Pack more crushed ice over the top until it creates a tightly packed dome, dash some Angostura bitters over the top, and garnish with a mint sprig

If you really just need to kick back and relax, we have some mint simple syrup and even a pre-made cocktail from Old Forester 😌

Aperitivo culture is having a major moment in the States, and we’ve been seeing more and more customers gravitating toward low-ABV cocktails that are refreshing, flavorful, versatile, and perfect for lingering around the dinner table. We’re calling it now: this is the Summer of Spritz ☀️

Sure, everyone knows the Aperol Spritz, and we love one too, but there’s an entire world of fortified wines, vermouths, amaros, ports, bitters, sherries, Madeiras, and more waiting to be explored. That spirit of experimentation is exactly what makes aperitivo culture so much fun 🌿

Each month, we’re highlighting a different base spirit to help you channel a little Mediterranean lifestyle energy 🌊

For this second installment, we’re highlighting one of the simplest spritzes of all: the classic Portuguese summer sipper, White Port and Tonic, or Portonic as they call it in Douro 🇵🇹

White Port is made using white grapes instead of red, and for this cocktail you generally want to use lighter, more fruit driven non-vintage styles. We’re highlighting this one from Taylor Fladgate, one of the most iconic Port houses. This a touch drier than many others in the category, has lots of melon, apple, and nectarine notes with both a floral lift and a nutty, lightly oaky finish. Simply pour it over ice and add tonic 🧊

The bitterness of the tonic cuts through the fruitiness of the wine, and then we encourage you to garnish with either a lemon twist or a sprig of mint. Best of all – this is one of those rare spritz variations that skips the sparkling wine…save a few bucks 😉

Dallas’s favorite grape of all time is Grüner Veltliner, and this month he’s sipping on this benchmark bottling 💚

Her Grüner Leader has been a casual mainstay at the store for a few years, but the Zöbinger is a step up in her portfolio of clean, precise, elegant Grüner.. Subtle, spicy notes of smoke, green apple, cracked white pepper, lime oil, and grassy green herbs 🌿

Dallas loves this with chimichurri over roasted fish, but also pairs it with grilled sausages 🐟🔥

Chardonnay Day is coming up on 5/21, so we wanted to highlight three Chardonnays from around the world that showcase the variety and complexity this grape can offer. For too long, American drinkers have either stuck to big, buttery California styles or landed firmly in the ABC camp (Anything But Chardonnay). Grab one of these bottles and change your mind 💛

🍐 If you like California Chardonnay but want something more balanced, check out Heitz Cellar’s Oak Knoll. One of Napa’s most iconic producers, Heitz delivers a more restrained style with notes of lemon curd, Bosc pear, granny smith apple, and honeydew melon.

🥭 Going Burgundy? Let’s go old too. Robert Ampeau built a reputation on aging wines before release, and this 2002 Meursault Perrières still drinks beautifully with dried mango, apricot, golden apple, elderflower, subtle oak, and a nutty mineral finish.

🦞 Last up: Mayer from Australia’s Yarra Valley. A cult favorite with exotic citrus, stone fruit, sea salt minerality, bright acidity, and a touch of funk. We’d love this with an Asian-inspired lobster dish.

Even though we think rosé should be drunk all year round, summertime is undoubtedlyundoubtably the best time to do it. What’s better than a ripping hot day and a chilled bottle of something pink? With rosé season right around the corner, Nick’s got some great picks for you 🌞

To start off, Domaine Lafond’s Tavel ‘Roc-Épine’ is killer. Tavel’s are a bolder, richer style of rosé, with notes cassis, blueberry, wild raspberry, and Mediterranean garrigue. Don’t let the color fool you – this is bone dry, but does toe the line between rosé and light red. Drink a little less chilled than you normally would a rosé, and hopefully you have some BBQ ribs or salmon tacos ready to go 🌮

Another great, slightly off the beaten path rose is Jaume’s Côtes du Rhône. Everyone knows CDR for the reds, but the region makes some great pink wines as well. This shows some yummy strawberry notes, clear stony minerality and a palate-coating, almost creamy texture. Dangerously drinkable 🍓

If you want to pull out the big guns, we’ve got a teensy tiny bit of Bertrand’s Clos du Temple. Bertrand is a rosé wizard, known for building the international powerhouse Côtes Du Roses brand, and Clos du Temple is a high end side project focused on advancing the reputation of rosé beyond simple, quaffable wines. The biodynamically grown grapes for this come from the historical Provençal subregion of Cabrières, and, unusually for rosé, the wine is lightly aged in oak before release. Complex notes of almond blossom, violets, rose water, sea salt, blond to***co, watermelon, blackberry, raspberry, and beeswax. This is already a stunner, but could even be aged 🌹

Marty loves a good Rhône, and he likes a good value even more! After several BLTs, he’s reaching for a few glasses of the awesome little CDR red 🍷

Kermit Lynch needs no introduction as one of the premier wine importers of our era, and they make import this as a ‘house wine’ for their portfolio 🇫🇷

The ‘village’ level CDR’s are generally seen as a step up in quality. Blackberry jam, strawberry compote, oregano, lavender and clove…the grill is calling, and wagyu burgers with bacon jam are on the other line 🫐 🍓

Resident rum nerd Dave has been saying for years: all the whiskey drinkers bored of overpriced, hard to locate allocated bourbons and ryes should get into rum 🌴

The bartender’s favorite rum distillery, Myers’s, is going after this market with a new release that sees their classic offering aged in casks previously used by Sazerac Rye’s legendary 18-year bottling 🥃

The result sits in the middle of the road, with a rye-esque nose of spice, orange peel and mint, and a rum-based palate of tropical fruits, vanilla, and banana. Sip on the rocks or make an incredible rum Old-Fashioned 🧊
