An elephant has been rescuing stranded animals from ditches and sinkholes before wildlife teams can even arrive. Now rangers want to give it a medal.
Wildlife rescue crews are used to being the first responders. But lately, one remarkable elephant has been beating them to the job.
Rangers report the gentle giant has been spotted multiple times using its trunk to pull stranded animals out of ditches and sinkholes across the region. Young antelope. Baby giraffes. Whatever falls in, this elephant shows up and hauls them back onto solid ground.
No training. No commands. No reward. Just an animal choosing to help other animals in trouble.
The rescues have saved countless lives and, according to officials, thousands of dollars in equipment and manpower that would have been needed for traditional recovery operations.
The elephant has become so well known among local crews that it essentially has a reputation. Rangers recognize it. They talk about it. They expect it to show up before they do.
And now officials say they are planning to present the elephant with a symbolic medal recognizing its extraordinary acts of kindness.
One ranger put it best. "We rescue wildlife for a living. But lately it feels like this elephant has been rescuing them for us."
No one taught this elephant to save lives. No one assigned it a territory. It just saw animals in trouble and decided to act, over and over again, without hesitation.
Some heroes wear uniforms. Some carry equipment. And some just show up with a trunk and a decision that no one nearby is going to stay stuck.
