Telmo Rodriguez, of Remelluri, was one of the most important wine personalities in Rioja. Then he went on to acquire 90ha of “grand cru vineyards across Spain becoming one of the country’s leading voices on terroir and organic farming practices.
Today we feature his brilliant Verdejo from Rueda. Tasting this powerhouse white is like putting your ear to the ground in a hundred year old, bush-trained vineyard. If they made Sancerre in NW Spain, it would be like this! If they made this in Burgundy, it would be $75! With some neutral barrel aging, the wine pours a pale straw color and shows zesty notes of citrus, fennel, dried herb and a soft floral character. The label inspiration comes from an old radio that blares in the vineyard to keep away opportunistic boar who otherwise forage on the fruit. Their loss . . . .
