Two days ago, our region lost two heroes in the line of duty in an unprecedented act of domestic terrorism that has shaken the foundation of our community.
Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Frank Harwood and Coeur d'Alene Fire Department Battalion Chief John Morrison were ambushed by a gunman while responding to a reported brushfire on Canfield Mountain east of Coeur d’Alene Sunday afternoon. The assailant took both of these men from us and critically injured a third, CDAFD Engineer David Tysdal, who is currently recovering at a local hospital.
Chief Harwood, a member of the U.S. Army National Guard and a 17-year veteran of the department, is survived by his wife and two children.
Chief Morrison, who joined the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department in 1996, professionally served his community for nearly 30 years.
We are greatly saddened by the events of this weekend and the loss of these great men. Those able to help support the families affected by this incident are encouraged to reach out to the Red & Blue Foundation in Hayden, ID.
