Did you know South Haven's Dyckman Avenue Bascule Bridge was Michigan's very first hydraulic bascule bridge? Completed in 1968, this Scherzer rolling lift bridge replaced an iron swing bridge that had stood for over 70 years — and before that, locals crossed the Black River by ferry and a wooden drawbridge dating all the way back to 1856.

Today, it's still the lifeline connecting the north and south sides of town, lifting its arms to let the boats roll through all summer long. ⛵💙

Now you can wear a piece of that history. Stop by Michigan Local Market at 200 Center Street in downtown South Haven and grab the new bridge tee, crew or hood!

It's that time! The newest episode of Behind the Business is now available to listen to on Apple Podcasts!

In this month's episode, I sat down with Lindy DeVries, owner of Michigan Local Market and part of the family behind Little Oscar’s in South Haven.

Lindy shares her journey from learning graphic design the old-school way with rubber cement and typewriters to building one of South Haven’s most recognizable local brands. We talk about the farmers market community, supporting Michigan artists, entrepreneurship, overcoming self-doubt, and how her recent breast cancer diagnosis has given her a new perspective on work-life balance.

This episode is honest, inspiring, emotional, and full of reminders about why supporting local businesses matters so much.

This morning, I rang the bell. Surgery done. Radiation done. Cancer free! Also, my podcast interview with Sam from "Behind the Business" just dropped this morning — where I share my journey, my business, and the people who have helped me along the way. I didn't plan the timing. But I think sometimes the universe times things just right to remind you why you're here, and that you still have work to do. Grateful beyond words. Focusing forward. ❤️

Hello friends! I've realized that I've never properly introduced myself!

My name is Lindy DeVries, and I am the owner of Michigan Local Market. I design and screen print the apparel sold in my store, Michigan Local Market in downtown South Haven and at the local Farmer’s Market.

I have been creative from a young age, exploring drawing, painting, embroidery, and a variety of crafts. As a teenager, I began working at Pat’s Pronto Print in South Haven, where I gained hands-on experience in graphic design, creating business cards, flyers, and other print materials. This inspired me to study graphic design at Kalamazoo Valley Community College and Grand Valley State University before stepping away to raise my son, Max, in 2003.

While staying home with my son, I began designing apparel as gifts for family and friends, using my family’s screen-printing business, Little Oscar’s, which my father started in our basement when I was a child. Although I never planned to run the family business, I later took it over so my parents could retire, gaining valuable experience designing and printing apparel for others.

One of my early designs—a Michigan hands map—sparked unexpected interest when friends and family began wearing it and others asked where they could purchase one. That design became the foundation of my business. In 2014, I was accepted into the local Farmer’s Market, where I began selling my apparel and driftwood artwork. The positive response encouraged me to expand my designs and grow the brand.

After several successful years at the market and frequent requests for a storefront, I opened my shop thanks to the support of my friend Trish King, who provided the opportunity to rent space in her building. Today, Michigan Local Market features my apparel alongside creations from other Michigan artisans, and I am proud to have been in business for 10 years.

I am deeply grateful to everyone who has supported my journey. It has been a joy to meet so many wonderful people and to share my work with both locals and visitors.
