News Update: Wine Tariffs

You have likely heard the news. The USTR published their response to the recent commentary on wine tariffs. Disappointingly, there has been no change to tariffs on wine.

Here are a couple articles on this challenging news:

https://www.winespectator.com/articles/trump-administration-keeps-tariffs-on-european-wines-in-place

We must keep up the good fight!

Higher US wine tariffs on some European imports will continue, officials have said, prompting 'disappointment' in Burgundy and anger among US retailers...

A very good article about the stare of the rare bourbon market.

Who's to blame for the booming secondary whisky market? The distillers who drive scarcity and allocation or the savvy flippers who capitalize on it all?

Preparation for the tasting: The white and sparkling wine should be well chilled and the red should be at cellar temperature and poured into a glass 15-20 minutes before Tasting.

Pairing suggestions: Crisp veggies like sugar snap peas, radish and cucumber with hummus or a creamy herbed dip, black olives, cured foods, feta/vegan feta with the Gruner Veltliner and Lambrusco. Chewy bread, good olive oil, tapenade, hard salty cheese or vegan cheese, mushroom pate, tomato, olive and onion focaccia or pizza with the Chianti.

Biohof Pratsch Gruner Veltliner 2019 1 Liter btl!

Tasting Notes: Fresh and zingy with flavors of melon, apple, white pepper and subtle spices. Pairs well with fresh herbs, Asian spices, Vegetarian dishes and lighter fare.

For centuries, the Weinviertel, in lower Austria, has been the region that delivers its wines to Vienna as it borders the city. Due to the rolling hills of the region the vines are grown on the tops of the hills to have better aeration and better drained soil.
Organic winemaking lets nature’s ways occur with just very soft guidance and the least amount of intervention. Today it more important than ever to respect nature and live according to its rules, this applies as well for viticulture. The Pratsch family, Wilhelm and Anneliese and their son, Stefan, have operated their Niederosterreich estate under organic certification since 1995. The vines here are over 50 years old and now 30 years under organic growth.

Cleto Chiarli Modena Vecchia Lambrusco di Sorbara

Tasting Notes: Flavors of fresh red cherries, and raspberries with mouthwatering acidity and just a touch of sweetness on the finish. This sparkling is made from red grapes and has a delicate mousse with a brilliant dark pink hue. Perfectly paired with antipasti and a huge variety of Vegetarian dishes.

The Vecchia Modena Premium Lambrusco di Sorbara represents the history both of the Chiarli wine Company and of Lambrusco wine itself. The bottle and label are reproductions of an 1892 bottle—the oldest existing bottle containing Lambrusco—that is still treasured in the Chiarli archives today. Chiarli Vecchia Modena won the first international recognition by a Lambrusco wine at the World Expo in Paris in 1900. Reintroduced in 2002 at a brand-new Cleto Chiarli winery, the wine is made through a single fermentation under pressure, rather than the normal two-fermentation process of almost all other sparkling wines. This is in the brut range, with minimal detectable sweetness.

Selvapiana Chianti Rùfina 2019

Tasting Notes: Bright, floral and nicely lifted with a dry lingering finish and a plush, silky texture.

Selvapiana is among the best-known and most respected of the two dozen growers in Rùfina—the smallest subzone of Chianti—and as it happens is also one of only two wineries to produce wine from the tiny Pomino DOC. The Selvapiana winery, like all of Chianti Rùfina, lies close to the Sieve River, a tributary of the Arno upriver from Florence. The air is cooler and cleaner here than in the city, which is why these hills have long been a retreat for aristocrats escaping Florence’s summer heat. During the Renaissance, one noble Florentine family constructed the Selvapiana residence by enlarging a medieval watchtower that was one of the outposts guarding Florence from invading enemies.

This Chianti Rùfina is the pillar of Selvapiana's production, using primarily Sangiovese with small contributions from traditional blending partners Canaiolo, Colorino, and Malvasia Nera. This wine is an excellent example of the finesse and crispness the Rùfina subzone of Chianti delivers.

Help! The threat of more tariffs is back!

It’s hard to digest that the two wine and spirits-related tariff issues (Large Aircraft and Digital Services Tax) have come forward again in the midst of such difficult circumstances for our country and industry. Unfortunately, we have no choice but to again make every effort to respond and gather support against threats to our mutual business.

Despite our industry’s effective opposition in January, the USTR has opened another review period in the Large Aircraft dispute in which they are again considering tariffs up to 100% on still and sparkling wines from Europe. At the same time, the new tariff threat over the Digital Services Tax recently imposed by several European countries is also very serious.

We are fighting a two headed monster, and we have to work against both.

Our industry has been protesting wine tariffs and not necessarily because we oppose all tariffs the US is seeking to implement upon the EU in response to the Enforcement of U.S. WTO Rights in the Large Civil Aircraft Dispute. Quite the contrary, we understand that this matter is “getting somewhere” with the implementation of tariffs.

The message we seek to send is simply this: wine tariffs don’t hurt the EU - they hurt US businesses. Small businesses. Three tiers of businesses.

“When a consumer walks into a wine store and buys a European wine, that retailer bought the wine from a U.S. wholesaler. The wholesaler, in turn, purchased it from a U.S. importer. All three are American businesses, and only the importer works directly with European producers. Besides alcohol, there is no similar system for other consumer goods in the U.S.”*

The three-tier system makes wine tariffs especially painful for our industry and community of small businesses.

Please write to the USTR describing how wine tariffs have hurt your business, your employees and your customers.

Comments are due July 26th. Please write your letter and upload HERE.
