Dancer, artist, yogi, mom, winemaker — though not necessarily in that order. As Chris Gorman puts it: “Without a doubt… she is an amazing winemaker and person.”
Winemaker Briah Hodal Gillespie graduated from the Northwest Wine Academy with a degree in Winemaking & Enology. Briah developed a love for wine while working in restaurants while pursuing a career in the arts. With a bachelor’s degree in Theater and Dance, she built a career in dance, yoga, and teaching before following her growing passion for wine. After working harvests and production at several local wineries, Briah joined Gorman Winery in 2019. Her dedication to craft and quality led to her promotion to Winemaker for the 2024 harvest.
Gorman’s wines consistently rank among the best in Washington. Recently, the 2021 Evil Twin Red Mountain earned 94 points and a coveted spot on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2024. The future is undeniably bright for this rising star. https://www.facebook.com/share/1BkNPyfv47/ Northwest Wine Academy at South Seattle College Gorman Winery Briah Hodal Gillespie Chris Gorman

Anne Stevens and Todd Threlkeld, husband and wife and co-owners of T2 Cellar, are both proud graduates of the Northwest Wine Academy. What began as a living room hobby—crafting wine in carboys—eventually led them to South Seattle College, where Todd became cellar master under founding winemaker Peter Bos. Their first commercial harvest came in 2016, and by 2019, they had opened a tasting room and production facility in Seattle’s S**o neighborhood. Todd and Anne partner with outstanding vineyards in Eastern Washington, developing relationships to source elegant, food-friendly wines. While their focus is on Rhône varietals, they’ve also earned acclaim for their Cabernet Sauvignons sourced from Red Willow Vineyard. From garage wines to gold medals—they’ve come a long way. Jens Hansen discovered his passion for wine during a 1995 deployment to Italy, where he flew peacekeeping missions over Bosnia and Kosovo. In his downtime, he explored local wineries with his Italian aviator colleagues, sparking a deep appreciation for winemaking. Years later, while stationed at Travis Air Force Base near Napa Valley, he began helping at a friend’s winery. After being medically retired from the military, Jens used his GI Bill to pursue a degree in winemaking from the Northwest Wine Academy.
In 2018, Jens and his brother T.J.—also a veteran—founded Uva Furem Winery. As Washington’s 1000th bonded winery and the nation's only registered 100% disabled veteran-owned winery, Uva Furem carries deep meaning. The name, Latin for “Grape Smuggler,” honors their military service. Every wine tells a story, paying tribute to members of the military community. Crafted with precision and heart, Uva Furem’s wines are pure, expressive, and a testament to the strength and resilience of those who serve.

Tom Stangeland never set out to start a winery.
His journey into wine began in Avignon, France, where he first learned how to taste—starting with Châteauneuf-du-Pape. “I had to pay $7 a bottle, which felt incredibly expensive at the time,” he recalls. But that bottle sparked a passion.
Back home, Tom began collecting Washington wines, carefully aging them to explore how they evolved over time. But to truly understand aging, he realized he needed to understand winemaking itself. As a craftsman by trade—and a maker at heart—he couldn’t stop at just tasting. So, he enrolled in wine production classes.
After graduating from the Northwest Wine Academy, Tom launched Cloudlift Cellars.
His wines are crafted with food in mind. A former chef who now hand-builds dining tables and chairs meant for long, lingering meals, Tom believes great wine should elevate the whole experience. After all the time you’ve spent preparing a meal, you deserve a wine that rises to meet it.
So stop by and get to know Tom; if you're lucky, he will invite you to dinner. Join us as we taste his latest releases at our Alumni Event. Saturday, August 9th https://www.facebook.com/share/1BkNPyfv47/ Northwest Wine Academy at South Seattle College Cloudlift Cellars

It’s hard to say exactly where Lobo Hills began. Was it the moment a driver didn’t see Tony on his bike that sunny April afternoon? Or was it years earlier, riding through the vineyards of Napa Valley, half-joking, “This is it—this is where we’re meant to be”?
Tony’s journey as a winemaker formally began at the Northwest Wine Academy, but his roots go much deeper—back to his college days leading tours at Almaden Vineyards in San Jose, one of California’s first wineries. From there, his path wound through Sweden, Denmark, England, Scotland, and the Netherlands before bringing him back to San Jose, where he ran the tasting room and served as Hospitality Director at J. Lohr Winery.
Eventually, a desire for something different led him to buy a VW van and travel the country, ultimately settling in Seattle. There, he briefly served as a wine steward at the acclaimed Canlis Restaurant before stepping away to write.
Today, Tony has come full circle—now the winemaker behind a 4,500-case urban winery, where he crafts wines designed to shine alongside food. For him, Lobo Hills is more than a label—it’s a way of life rooted in community, conversation, shared meals, and the simple joy of drinking good wine with the people you love.

Bill Grassie embarked upon his vision to create world-class wine in 2006, when he moved to the Seattle area. Bill loves great wine and is an avid gardener. His passion for gardening led him to plant a vineyard on a bare patch of ground at his new property in Fall City, WA. This seemingly inconsequential decision in 2007 (to create the vineyard) accelerated his efforts to become a winemaker, as it led him to the Northwest Wine Academy. At the Northwest Wine Academy, Bill gained valuable knowledge and developed critical relationships, enabling him to create award-winning wines in 2011.
