In Scottsboro, Alabama...Payne’s Sandwich Shop & Soda Fountain takes you straight back to the 1950s, where you can enjoy classic milkshakes and simple diner food surrounded by old-school charm. This spot sits in a historic courthouse square building that dates back to 1891, when it first opened as a drug store. It was brought back to life as a soda fountain in 1991, and much of the original look is still there today, from the old counters to the small details that give it that true throwback feel. On the menu, you’ll find Coca-Cola floats, sundaes, and banana splits, along with local favorites like the Slaw Dog, BLT, Doug’s Club Wrap, and the South of Philly Steak. In 2024, it was named one of the best retro diners in the South by Southern Living, showing why this place has stayed a favorite in town for so many years.
